WHY A CITIZENS' RIGHT TO VETO LAWS BY WAY OF A REFERENDUM IS NECESSARY IN THE UK
THE PROBLEM WITH UK DEMOCRACY TODAY
The United Kingdom’s First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) electoral system routinely produces governments that lack majority public support.
No UK government has ever been elected with even 50% of the public vote. Yet once in power, these governments can pass laws with little real opposition—often acting as an elected dictatorship.
WHY THE UK IS NOT TRULY DEMOCRATIC
1. Unrepresentative Governments
Under FPTP, a party can win a majority of seats with a minority of the vote—leaving most of us powerless over what laws are passed.
2. No Public Right of Veto
Unlike countries like Switzerland and others, the UK offers no mechanism for the public to challenge or overturn unpopular laws.
Once a law is passed, citizens must wait five years for another election—under the same broken system.
3. Weak Checks on Power
With no written constitution, governments can erode fundamental rights by simple majority vote.
Examples include:
Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005
Terrorism Acts 2000 & 2006
Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006
Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000
Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022
Public Order Act 2023
In progress
Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill
Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill
Crime and Policing Bill
Deprivation of Citizenship Orders (Effect during Appeal) Bill
Employment Rights Bill
English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill
Financial Assistance to Ukraine Act 2025
Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill
THE SOLUTION: A CITIZENS’ RIGHT OF VETO
A new Citizens' Right of veto with referendum powers would:
✅ Restore democratic balance by allowing public veto of unjust laws
✅ Force governments to seek consensus
✅ Give people real power between elections
✅ Follow proven democratic models from other countries
This reform isn’t extreme—it’s essential. It’s time to take back our voice.
THIS IS WHERE CHANGE BEGINS
Support our Parliamentary Petition to give citizens the right to veto laws by national referendum
Never doubt the power of your voice.
When 10,000 of us speak, the government must respond.
When 100,000 rise, Parliament must debate.
But when 1 million people demand change, the will of the people cannot be ignored.
Every signature is a stand against injustice—a spark in a growing fire for real democracy.
Add your name. Be the reason change happens.
