Project outline

Lakes are vital freshwater resources providing crucial habitats, supporting biodiversity, and offering recreational and educational opportunities. However, urbanization significantly impacts lake ecosystems, leading to contamination and degradation through waste discharge and development. Coimbatore, a rapidly growing city in South India with eight lakes covering 671.61 hectares and an estimated annual ecosystem service value of 610 crores, exemplifies this challenge. Despite rejuvenation efforts through Smart City projects, pollution from sewage and municipal waste continues to cause eutrophication and fish kills. This project proposes a cost-effective solution using floating wetlands to address this pressing environmental issue, recognizing the increasing need for intensified lake conservation efforts in a changing world.
