Garry Garretson serves as the President of the Veterans Writing Group of San Diego County. His career in the U.S. Navy was from 1965 to 1969, and included three years flight crew in Vietnam flying transport, early warning for the 7th Fleet and coastal movement, and typhoon tracking throughout the Pacific Ocean (3000 flight hours and three Air Medals).
He also served as Board Chairmanship on School Board (six years), Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Commission (fifteen years), Planning Commission (eight years), and the Tri-City Hospital Foundation (two years).
Previously, Garry has nonprofit experience through the Vista Education Foundation (VEF) with focus on raising funds for public school students, and Educate to Career (ETC) which provided data for selection of colleges and careers. Garry spent forty years with Fortune 500 Corporation ServiceMaster/ARAMARK; five years as Division Controller, five as executive salesman, fifteen in talent acquisition hiring over 2000 personnel, and fifteen years in operational leadership of 1000 personnel.
Garry has spent twelve years in service to the Veterans Writing Group, ten years supporting transitioning military personnel through VetCTAP, and is member of Vista Chamber of Commerce and the North San Diego Business Chamber.
Married for 56 years to Julie, they have three children; Bill, Debbie, and Steve, along with one Grandson, Bobby, and a great grandson on the way. Garry and Julie have been members of North Coast Church in Vista for thirty years.
After graduating from Wichita East High School in Wichita, Kansas in May 1988, Armen Kurdian attended the University of Kansas from September 1988 to May 1993 and earned a BS in Aerospace Engineering, along with his commission as an Ensign in the US Navy.
CAPT (Ret.) Kurdian attended flight school in NAS Pensacola, Florida and NAS Norfolk, Virginia, earning his wings of gold as an E-2C Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in March 1996. During his 25+ year career, he served in two deployments plus counter-narcotics operations, became a member of the Aviation Engineering Duty Officer Community, and spent eleven years performing Defense Acquisition, Test, and Evaluation activities for the E-2C Hawkeye and E-2D Advanced Hawkeye unmanned system, GPS user equipment, and engineering/product support for Naval Aviation and Surface Warfare.
He earned a Masters of Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a dual Masters of Business Administration through Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, and Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. He has a Certificate of Public Leadership from the Brookings Institute, and has multiple other professional certifications including Certified Systems Engineering Professional and Project Management Professional. Currently CAPT (ret) Kurdian is a Lead Associate and Senior Systems Engineer with Booz Allen Hamilton in San Diego, California, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Veterans Writing Group. He also serves as a board member of the San Diego County Palomar Airport Advisory Committee and is the Chair of the Policy Roundtable for the Lincoln Business League of San Diego County. He makes regular appearances on many local and national news outlets speaking on a variety of topics including politics, foreign policy, defense, and engineering.
His contributions to this book are of a more light-hearted and humorous nature, with anecdotes that while fun to read, also include little life lessons from which we can all learn.
Dante’ Puccetti enlisted in the Army and became an Artillery Surveyor. He was stationed in Vietnam at the HHB, 4thDivision Artillery at Camp Enary, Pleiku, from June 1968 – March 1969. He received a BA in psychology in 1986, and then worked as a counselor, data manager, and research and statistical analyst in the Alcohol Treatment Unit at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Loma Linda, California. With Dr. Michael Chang and Dr Paul Yamaguchi, Dante’ co-authored a paper published in The Journal of Alcohol Studies titled “Split Level Validity of Treatment Compliance in an Alcohol Treatment Program.” Dante’ was a recent staff member at SO. CAL. (SCCA) NEWS. Part of his memoir was published inExiting Vietnam, authored by Michael Eggleston. Dante’ is a member of Eggleston’s writing review staff.
Edward “Ed” Harrington was a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) in the Navy for 30 years from 1984 through 2014. He served on five ships, and was the Second in Command on two ships, including the USS TARAWA (LHA-1), with a thousand-person crew. He also had Command of two amphibious units and served as the Commodore of Naval Beach Group ONE in Coronado, California.
Since retiring from the Navy, Ed has worked as a contractor supporting the Navy’s high speed amphibious landing craft program at Camp Pendleton, California for the last ten years. However, his passion has become helping military veterans. He teaches free classes for military members leaving the service to help them with their post-military careers for nearly nine years. He has also been running a faith-based Veteran networking group for over 30 months. His organization, called VET-MENTOR-VIEW, is now designated as a VA Center for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships (FBNP).
Brian Sanchez was born in Los Angeles, California, and entered the US Marine Corps in 1990 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. After serving in the enlisted ranks for several years, he completed Marine Corps Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia, and finished his bachelor’s degree at California State University, Los Angeles, to earn a commission in the officer ranks. He served in many operations and combat deployments throughout the world, to include Iraq and Afghanistan. Brian retired from a distinguished and decorated active-duty career as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2021. He is the son of an Army Vietnam Veteran, and he is the proud father of four children. Derek Barraza is a Project Management Professional (PMP) with senior-level experience delivering information technology solutions. Derek has performed various roles including Business Development, Account Executive, Customer Relationship Manager, Project Manager, Business Systems Analyst, Quality Assurance Manager, and Software Developer. Derek has consulted to clients in numerous industries including automotive, aerospace, healthcare, insurance, finance, logistics, sales, utilities, and high tech. Derek’s experience includes several years in leadership roles at the local, regional, and national levels. He has served as a director and officer on several nonprofit boards and helped transform organizations. Derek enjoys photography, travel, soccer, reading, gardening, and community service. Derek and Cindy, his wife of 44 years, raised three sons and have one grandson.
Michael Hart, a native Californian, grew up in San Francisco and spent his youth and academic years in Northern California. After earning a B.S. from the University of California, Davis, and an MBA from San Francisco State University, he began his investment career on the Options Floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange in 1987. In 1989, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he started his institutional investment career in the Investment Department at Farmers Group, Inc., eventually rising to Senior Portfolio Manager. In 2001, he founded his own investment management company, which merged with Tradewind Global Investors, a Los Angeles-based global investment advisor, in 2007. In 2014, Michael established Hemispheres Investment Management, headquartered in Los Angeles until January 2024, when he moved to San Marcos in North San Diego. Hemispheres manages global investments for over 55 clients, most of whom are California residents. Throughout his career, Michael has researched and invested in various capital market segments, including domestic and international equities, domestic investment-grade and high-yield bonds, emerging market bonds, and options. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). As an experienced financial professional, Michael is excited to support the Veterans Writing Group of San Diego County with its organizational efforts and needs.
