One story I love about the Lunar New Year is how the animals were given their order in the Chinese Zodiac. Here is one version…
The Jade Emperor summoned all animals to a race. The first 12 to cross the line will be awarded signs in the Chinese zodiac in the order that they finished. During the race, the animals came across a river, and the Rat noticed the Ox easily crossing the swift current. The Rat quickly jumped on the Ox’s back to ride safely across. The hardworking Ox did not mind. Once on shore, the Rat ran to the emperor and claimed first place. He was followed by the ox, who took second. They were followed by the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
