Cops build huge bamboo artwork

VEGHEL – “Yeah, how do you put that in a positive way, huh? The enthusiasm was really huge, but cops are just rather clumsy in general.” Bamboo artist Antoon Versteegde from Uden is clear in his judgment about the 10-meter high work of art that about 80 officers put together on Monday afternoon in the Juliana Park in Veghel.

The bamboo pyramid that the officers made was the crowning glory of a theme day for senior officers of the Brabant-Noord Police Force. “To put our noses in the same direction again,” says communication advisor Nicole van Ooijen. “The theme was collaboration and after a day of discussions and presentations it is nice to put the theme into practice. This is the back of the police work. We can be seen on the street a lot, but it is also important to occasionally reflect on the organization of our work. After all, it has to be managed properly.”

Versteegde would like to emphasize that the agents ultimately made something really beautiful. “They worked more and more energetically and in the end everyone was walking around really enthusiastically, just like little boys. Funny too, to see officers spraying graffiti for banners in the artwork. Some young people came by and you saw them! It was very nice to see officers in a different atmosphere.”

Agenten bouwen enorm bamboekunstwerk

VEGHEL – “Ja, hoe breng je dat nou positief, hè? Het enthousiasme was echt enorm groot, maar agenten zijn over het algemeen gewoon nogal onhandig.” Bamboekunstenaar Antoon Versteegde uit Uden is duidelijk in zijn oordeel over het 10 meter hoge kunstwerk dat zo’n 80 agenten maandagmiddag in het Julianapark in Veghel in elkaar zetten.

De bamboepiramide die de agenten maakten, was de kroon op een themadag voor leidinggevende agenten van Politie Brabant-Noord. “Om de neuzen weer eens dezelfde richting in te zetten”, vertelt communicatie-adviseur Nicole van Ooijen. “Het thema was samenwerken en na een dag gesprekken en presentaties is het leuk om het thema dan zo in de praktijk te brengen. Dit is de achterkant van het politiewerk. We zijn veel op straat te zien, maar het is ook belangrijk om af en toe stil te staan bij de organisatie van ons werk. Het moet tenslotte goed geleid worden.”

Versteegde wil nog wel benadrukken dat de agenten uiteindelijk echt iets moois gemaakt hebben. “Ze gingen steeds voortvarender te werk en op het laatst liep iedereen écht heel enthousiast rond, net kleine jongens. Grappig ook, om agenten graffiti te zien spuiten voor spandoeken in het kunstwerk. Er kwamen wat jongeren langs en die zag je wel even kijken! Het was heel leuk om agenten eens in een andere sfeer te zien.”
