What is a Bat Mitzvah?
A "Bat Mitzvah" is both the name of an event and the name of a person. Bat Mitzvah literally means “daughter of the commandment” and by turning 12 years old, a girl is automatically considered an “adult” within her Jewish community. By becoming a bat mitzvah, Veronica accepts more responsibility for her actions and embraces the obligations of Jewish life, including observing mitzvot (commandments) and a commitment to lifelong worship, learning, and tikkun olam (healing the world through acts of kindness). Veronica is also now counted as one of the Jewish adults required for a minyan (10 Jewish adults required for communal prayer), and she is eligible to lead a religious service.
What is going to happen?
The evening will begin with the religious ceremony held in the Sanctuary. You are welcome to sit wherever and with whomever you choose. The Rabbi and Cantor will be conducting Veronica's bat mitzvah service in English and Hebrew. Veronica will be reading some parts and singing others. A few honored guests will also be invited to participate. Essentially you'll be doing some sitting, some standing, and a lot of watching and listening. After Veronica's service we'll be partying!!!
What do I wear?
For adults, we would recommend "Cocktail Chic."
For kids, we would recommend something you wore for 5th or 6th grade graduation. Or, if you'd like to kick it up a notch in preparation for the partying, what you wore for your 7th grade end of year party would be fun too.
We welcome dresses, khakis and a jacket, or even a suit if you're feeling particularly fancy. Feel free to come in high heels or your most comfortable kicks - whatever you prefer to wear to dance.
Caveat for all: No jeans or graphic t-shirts, please. If your fit has exposed shoulders, we would recommend some fabric to keep them covered during the religious service.
What do I do with my parents?
Parents acting as designated drivers for the evening are welcome to relax during the event at a local restaurant in one of our neighboring towns of New Haven, Orange, Milford, or Ansonia. They'll even have time to take in a show at the Shubert Theatre or a movie at Bowtie Cinemas (both in New Haven) or at Cinemark in Milford. The Visiting page of this website has more ideas.
What if my parents or I have other questions?
