The AOE, in collaboration with Vermont educators and staff from Great Schools Partnership, have developed a body of resources for schools, supervisory unions, and districts to use as they develop and implement PBGRs. These include sample sets of graduation proficiencies that are specific to academic content areas (e.g., Math, English, Science), and sample graduation proficiencies for transferable skills that cross content areas (e.g., effective communication, creative and practical problem-solving).

The Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirement (PBGR) Hierarchies support equity by providing a cohesive and coordinated vision of student-centered learning across Vermont schools. The hierarchies serve as a foundation for the implementation of standards adopted by the Vermont State Board of Education, Local Comprehensive Assessment Systems, flexible pathways, and personalized learning plans.

Our mission encompasses our dual purposes of offering an accredited high school education and providing risk-reducing interventions within the Vermont Department of Corrections to decrease recidivism.

Corrections Education Headmaster and Assistant Head of School will coordinate the school's efforts to comply with the regulations implementing Title VI, Title IX, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act, and other non-discrimination laws or regulations. CHSVT has a grievance procedure for discrimination complaints that can be found in the Corrections Education Protocols and the Student Handbook.

Attention Current and Former Adult Students, Parents/Guardians of Minor Students:

Special education records which have been collected by the Community High School of Vermont (CHSVT) related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education at the Community High School of Vermont, must be maintained under state and federal laws for a period of seven years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student no longer is eligible for services, graduates, completes his or her educational program, or discontinues education with the school.

After seven (7) years, records that are no longer useful to the school may be useful to the adult student or parent/guardian in applying for Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The adult student or parent/guardian may request a copy of the records by emailing DOC or via phone at 802-241-0055

You earn your diploma and industry recognized credentials through demonstration of skills and knowledge in required subject areas through a series of carefully designed assessments and the creation of a portfolio. You'll take tests, write papers, and complete assignments. But rather than focus on seat time or credit hours, we make sure you graduate as a highly competent professional.

During each fiscal year, the Agency of Education collects data from Vermont's supervisory unions and school districts about students, staff, enrollment and assessments. The data collected help inform us, schools, educators and taxpayers about the functionality and success of Vermont's education system.

Juniors and seniors attending a public high school, technical center, or an independent school using public tuition dollars in Vermont are eligible for two Dual Enrollment vouchers, each good for one free college course at Castleton University, Community College of Vermont, Johnson State College, Lyndon State College and Vermont Technical College, as well as other participating Vermont colleges. The free credits earned at college also count as credit towards graduation from high school.

Before applying for a dual enrollment voucher, please review the eligibility guidelines. All questions related to eligibility, processes, and participation in the program should be emailed to aoe.dualenrollment@vermont.gov.

Concurrent enrollment courses are taken at a high school or technical center location. Some Vermont high school and technical center teachers have been approved to teach actual Vermont Tech courses. This is an excellent opportunity for students who do not live close to a Vermont Tech campus location, but who have the academic ability to participate in college-level courses and get an early start to college.

Vermont high school students enrolled in selected partner programs at their local career/ technical center are eligible for Fast Forward Tickets. The tickets let students earn college credit for one or more courses for $100 each and two courses tuition free. Each of the 17 Vermont Technical or Comprehensive High Schools currently have dual enrollment agreements in place or are working on future agreements. Click here for a listing of Career/Technical Centers in the state and more information on the career pathways available.

The Vermont High School Prize Examination in Mathematics, informally known as the UVM Math Contest, has been held annually since 1958 and is believed to be the longest continuously running high school mathematics contest of its kind in the United States. The competition is open to all secondary students in Vermont (students who have not yet graduated from high school). Prizes are awarded each year to the top eight students in the state and to the top two students in each of four regions of the state. Certificates are awarded to all students who place in the top ten percent statewide, and to the student who submits the best paper in each school.

Established in 1997, the Community Sailing Center hosts the only high school sailing team in Vermont! All interested students from area high schools (public or private) and home schools that have sailing experience and are in good standing at their school are welcome as team members. NVHSST offers sailors the chance to fine tune their skills during regular team practices and compete throughout New England. The team practices three to five days a week after school, with weekend regattas both at home and away. We sail and compete in both the spring and the fall.

Current participating schools include: Champlain Valley Union HS, Burlington HS, Essex HS, Rice HS, South Burlington HS and Vermont Commons School. But you can register from any school in Vermont.

Practices will be held 3 days a week with occasional weekend regatta travel for those selected. Students must sail at an intermediate level or higher to participate in the Fall. Previous racing experience or participation on the team is best.

Details & Registration

The 67th annual competition will be held on March 12, 2024. If your school would like to participate, one person responsible for coordinating the contest at your school (typically the chair of mathematics or another interested teacher) should register for the school. You can see a list of currently registered schools here.
