Political Terms and Election Protocol

The General Election (Minister & Vice Minister, Top Justice, Justice of the Peace, Provincial Governors, Delegates) shall occur on July 1st of every year. 

The Midterm Election (Top Justice, Justice of the Peace, Provincial Governors, Delegates) shall occur on the Second Monday in January of every year.

The Election for the Council of Elections (Chairperson, Assistant Chairperson, Councilmembers) shall occur on the Third Monday of December of every year.

In the event of a spontaneous vacancy of a position, the position’s deputy shall assume the role. If the position has no deputy, a by-election must be called by the Council of Elections at least 7 days after the position’s vacancy.

The term of the Minister and the Vice Minister shall be about one year. 

The term of the Top Justice, Justice of the Peace, and Provincial Governors shall be about six months.

The term of all members of the Council of Elections shall be about one year.

The terms of the Department Directors and other nominated positions shall be from nomination (and once they have taken the Oath of Office) until the end of the Minister’s term.

The terms of Delegates shall be from the swearing in of said delegate, and shall continue until the dissolution of that same Parliament, or their expulsion or resignation. If a Parliamentary Session is called while the House is dissolved, Delegates from the previous Parliament shall serve. 

1. A new Parliament should begin and end either:

   1. The First week of September until the Fourth week of January,

   2. The Fourth week of January until the Second or Third week of June.

The Minister, Vice Minister, and all other candidates elected strictly during the General Election’s (Top Justice, Justice of the Peace, Provincial Governors) terms shall begin on July 5th, with or without taking the Oath of Office. It is recommended that they take the Oath within their term, though. Official Tabulated Results for a General Election must be certified by the Council of Elections before July 5th.

All candidates elected strictly during the Midterm Elections (Top Justice, Justice of the Peace, Provincial Governors) terms shall begin once the Official Tabulated Results are certified and the candidate has taken their Oath of Office.

All members of the Council of Elections’ terms shall begin after the Official Tabulated Results are certified by the outgoing council (which starts a new council) and once candidates have taken their Oath of Office.

Candidates elected in by-elections shall begin their terms immediately after the Official Tabulated Votes are certified and the candidate has taken the Oath of Office. The candidate shall then serve out the rest of the term.

Only the Top Justice can administer the Oath of Office.

The terms of Delegates elected during the General or Midterm election shall begin upon the commencement of the term of Parliament to which they were elected. The Dean of the House of Delegates or their designee shall be responsible for this duty. The terms of Delegates elected during a special election shall begin upon their swearing in by the Speaker of the House of Delegates.

Races with a singular candidate should refer to Freedom 11.

Races with two candidates (and a write-in option) shall use a First-Past-the-Post direct voting system.

Races with three or more candidates (and a write-in option) shall use a Ranked Choice Voting system.

Races where voters can choose multiple candidates (and a write-in option) shall use a multi-choice voting system limited to the seats available in that race.

Races with situations not mentioned here shall have precedent set by the Council of Elections or an Act of Parliament.
