If you want to eliminate the dangerous, heavy slam of a closing tailgate on your Dodge Ram for daily driving and road trips, choose Vepagoo Tailgate Assist; if you need a dedicated solution to safely haul multiple bicycles without scratching your paint or your bikes, choose TRENLUVA Tailgate Bike Pad. These two products solve fundamentally different problems, and picking the wrong one leaves you with a truck that either bangs loudly when parked or fails to carry your weekend adventure gear securely.
• Vepagoo Tailgate Assist: Its biggest strength is the smooth, controlled soft-close mechanism that prevents slamming and saves your hands; its trade-off is that it is strictly for Dodge Ram trucks from 2009 to 2025 and does nothing for cargo transport. This pick is for Ram owners who want to upgrade their daily driving experience and safety.
• TRENLUVA Tailgate Bike Pad: Its biggest strength is the capacity to hold up to five bikes while protecting both the vehicle and the equipment with thick padding and tool storage; its trade-off is that it is a large accessory that covers the entire tailgate and is not designed for general cargo or soft-close functionality. This pick is for cycling enthusiasts and families planning group rides or trail trips.
The Vepagoo Tailgate Assist is engineered specifically for drivers of Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 models spanning production years from 2009 through 2025. If you own one of these trucks, you know the struggle: the tailgate is heavy, often unbalanced, and prone to slamming shut with a force that can damage the latch, dent the bumper, or pinch fingers. This product installs directly into the hinge area to act as a hydraulic damper. The result is a controlled descent where the gate lowers slowly and gently until it latches itself. You no longer have to manually guide the heavy metal sheet down; you simply let go, and the unit does the work.
The construction relies on electroplated 45# structural steel, which suggests a high tolerance for corrosion and long-term durability in harsh weather conditions. This isn't a flimsy plastic add-on; it is built to withstand the vibrations of highway driving and the rigors of off-road use. The installation process is designed to be accessible for the average DIYer, requiring no drilling into the body of the truck. Instead, it uses included hardware like ball mount plates and nutsert tools, along with specific Allen wrenches, to secure the shock absorber in place within about ten minutes.

Who should buy this? Anyone frustrated by the noise and risk of a slamming tailgate should consider this. It is particularly valuable for parents loading groceries or tools who need both hands free to manage items while keeping the gate safe. However, if you drive a Ford F-150, a Toyota Tacoma, or any non-Dodge Ram, this part will not fit. Furthermore, if your primary goal is to transport large, awkward loads like lumber, furniture, or bicycles, this device offers zero utility. It is purely a comfort and safety upgrade for the operation of the tailgate itself, not a cargo management system.
The TRENLUVA Tailgate Bike Pad is a specialized carrier designed for cyclists who want to transport multiple bikes on the back of their pickup without mounting them to a rack or risking damage to the truck bed. The pad measures 50 inches wide, making it compatible with most compact and mid-sized trucks including the Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, Ridgeline, and TRD Off-Road Tundra. Its core function is to provide a padded surface where bike frames rest, secured by adjustable hook-and-loop straps that can accommodate up to five adult bikes, whether they are mountain, road, gravel, or e-bikes.
What sets this apart is the dual-layer protection strategy. The outer shell is made of 600D PVC material, which is resistant to tearing, dirt, and the elements. This is critical for off-road adventures where bumpy trails could otherwise transfer impact directly to the bike's carbon frame or the truck's tailgate paint. The design also includes a roll-up flap that reveals the backup camera and tailgate handle, ensuring that reversing the truck remains safe and functional even when the pad is fully deployed.
This product is ideal for family trips, group rides, or weekend camping excursions where you need to bring a squad of bikes along. The inclusion of inner-facing tool pockets allows you to store multi-tools, tire patches, and locks right on the pad, turning the tailgate into an organized mobile repair station. The reflective strips added to the exterior enhance visibility during early morning or night travel, addressing a common safety concern for rear-mounted cargo. However, this is not a universal fit for every vehicle type, and it is clearly intended for bikes, not general hauling. If you do not ride bikes, this accessory sits idle on your tailgate.
• Best for Daily Driving Comfort → Vepagoo Tailgate Assist, because it eliminates the physical effort and noise of lowering a heavy tailgate every time you park.
• Best for Group Cycling Trips → TRENLUVA Tailgate Bike Pad, as it securely holds up to five bikes and keeps them protected during transit.
• Best for Cargo Versatility → Neither; Vepagoo only affects the gate movement, and TRENLUVA is exclusively for bikes. Neither replaces a full bed rack for lumber or appliances.
• Best for Weather Resistance → TRENLUVA Tailgate Bike Pad, given its waterproof Oxford surface and UV-resistant 600D PVC designed for muddy off-road sessions.
• Best for Installation Simplicity → Vepagoo Tailgate Assist, which requires no drilling and fits specific Ram models with standard tools in under ten minutes.
• Best for Visibility → TRENLUVA Tailgate Bike Pad, featuring high-visibility reflective strips that alert other drivers to your load in low light.
• Best for Vehicle Specificity → Vepagoo Tailgate Assist, but only if you drive a Dodge Ram between 2009 and 2025; otherwise, it is useless.
I would buy the Vepagoo Tailgate Assist if my daily life involved frequent stops and starts with a Dodge Ram, especially for road trips where I value peace and quiet over loud banging noises. It solves an immediate annoyance that occurs every single day. However, I would choose the TRENLUVA Tailgate Bike Pad if my primary motivation for owning a truck was to take my family and friends on mountain biking adventures. For those specific road trips focused on outdoor recreation, the ability to transport five bikes safely without damaging my truck or my expensive carbon frames makes the TRENLUVA the superior choice for that lifestyle.
