Suresh Balaji, Venugopalan

Senior National Arbiter

In the 1970s, my father, Mr. Venugopalan V, discovered chess as a means to forge friendships in his professional life. Teaching himself English to delve into chess literature, he embarked on a journey into competitive play. In the 1990s, my curiosity led me to observe his matches, gradually becoming his study companion and playing partner. By the early 2000s, my passion for the game drove me to become an Arbiter (Tournament Director), as our family's financial circumstances limited our ability to afford tournament entry fees. Despite this, I became one of the youngest 'National Arbiters' recognized by the 'All India Chess Federation'. Concurrently, my father transitioned into coaching, leaving a profound impact on over 100 young players, many of whom went on to achieve remarkable titles including Asian Champions and National Champions. In 2022, my father's visit to the US sparked a newfound love for chess in my children, marking the third generation of chess enthusiasts in our family. As my father's health declined, my children became his final disciples. In tribute to his legacy, I am embarking on the journey of establishing the 'Venu Champs Chess Club', where chess is introduced to young minds in a joyous and engaging manner. It is my endeavor to continue contributing to the chess community in various capacities, carrying forward the passion instilled by my father.
