Venice - Analyzing the Economy After COVID

Comparing the state of the Venetian retail sector before and after COVID-19

Mission Statement: This project is intended to help SmartDest and SerenDPT analyze how COVID-19 has impacted the Venetian economy. We will achieve this by providing a tool for visualizing the state of the Venetian retail and hospitality sectors before and after the pandemic with accompanying graphics to highlight important trends in the data.

11/16/21: Hopefully soon we can be full force collecting data as our team has been struck with illness for the last two weeks. Based on the projected time to collect data once all three group members are healthy it will take roughly two weeks to make up for lost time.

11/3/21: We did our first test of the application today. In roughly 25 minutes working as one person we were able to collect data on 14 stops, even finding 2 shops that were never collected before. Once we are able to split apart the data collection will likely take about 3 weeks.

10/26/21: The web application is nearly finished so we can start collecting data. The goal is to do a test run at the beginning of next week.

10/18/21: We have spent one night in Venice now and just had our orientation for the term. We are very excited to get started on our project and explore the wonderful city of Venice.

10/4/21: We are about to enter our final week of PQP meetings and ID2050 classes. This week we will be submitting our final proposal and presenting our project proposal to the class on Thursday the 7th. Everything has gone smoothly this term and we hope to carry this over into next term when we are in Italy allowing us to collect data as much data as possible.

9/15/21: Reviewed a case study titled "Overtourism and the night-time economy: a case study of Budapest". We learned that questionnaires as a method for data collection is a poor method to use when collecting data in a foreign country. The language barrier and the unfamiliarity of the area add to the difficulties of executing a questionnaire. Documentation however such as video taking or observational data collection are strong methods to use to collect data since there are no obstacles in play. Only way of messing up said data collection is own human error from the project team.

9/11/21: Meeting with Daniele; one of our collaborators, was set up and we will be speaking to him this coming Wednesday about the deliverables we will be working on and fixing by the end of the project.

9/10/21: Team meeting to distribute the new work assigned in ID2050, work will contribute to our proposal. We will be working on a literature review and will be researching case studies similar to our project. New meeting chair is Kalle Asaro and the secretary will be Sanjeet Pawar.

9/8/21: Team meeting to develop ideas for the proposal for advisors. Developed critical thinking skills crucial to the development of the background outline, while also using feedback from advisors.

9/4/21: Team meeting in order to distribute work for ID2050 and PQP assignments.

9/2/21: Created concept map which helps visualize and organize project goals.

9/1/21: Team member has begun learning web design.

8/31/21: Team met with librarian to discuss and learn research strategies.
