Derek Higham was a true pioneer of tattooing in the North West, beginning his artistic journey back in 1959, making him one of the earliest practitioners in that region. Born in Hindley, Wigan in 1944, Derek spent his early years visiting Blackpool where fate led him into the world of tattooing, apprenticing under the renowned Harry Lever on Bonny Street. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he grew into a respected figure in the industry, known both for his technical skill and unwavering integrity.
A globe-trotter at heart, Derek brought his craft to clients across the world from Australia to Florida, collecting both stories and lifelong friendships along the way. He championed health, safety, and professionalism in tattooing, playing a key role in the formation of modern hygiene standards and legislation; including support for the Tattooing of Minors Act in 1969 and held membership in the British Tattoo Artists Federation and the British Guild of Professional Tattoo Artists.
Though he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia in 2012, Derek’s impact never waned. He remains loved and remembered long after his passing in November 2019 at age 75, leaving behind not just a family but a legacy celebrated by artists worldwide . He was known as “The salt of the Earth,” which speaks volumes about his character: warm, genuine, and deeply respected.
Today, Derek’s legacy lives on through his family and remains in the hearts of many of the greats in tattooing. His son Andy and one of his granddaughters Jamie continue to tattoo in Blackpool under the name Vendetta Tattoo Works proudly carrying forward the family tradition and honouring the values Derek instilled: skill, care, and respect for the craft. Andy Higham, Derek's son, has been tattooing since the age of 16, 1989. Since then, his passion for the craft has remained unwavering. He has also taught his second-born daughter how to tattoo. She started at the age of 16 and has now been tattooing for two years. In that time, she's shown steady progress and a growing understanding of the industry. Growing up around Derek and Andy's studios has clearly fueled Jamie's interest in tattooing from a young age. She hopes to honor both her grandfather and father by continuing their legacy for many years to come.
