Velum PDF Reader (“Velum,” “we,” or “us”) is operated by the publisher named above. This policy explains what information the Android app handles, where it is stored, and when another provider may process it.
PDFs you open. You choose a PDF through Android’s document picker or open one from another app. Velum reads the selected file using Android’s granted access. It does not automatically copy imported PDFs to a Velum server; Velum does not operate a document upload server or user account system.
Library and reading information. To provide the Library, Velum stores document details needed to identify and display selected files, such as their names and locations, and your favorites, bookmarks, and reading progress. Settings such as your chosen reader theme are also stored in app-private storage on your device.
Scans. If you choose Scan, Google Play services presents Google’s document-scanning flow. Google says this flow runs on-device; it uses Google Play services’ camera permission, and you control the scan and the result returned to Velum. If you accept a scan, Velum saves the resulting PDF in its private app storage and adds it to your Library. The scanner can also let you choose pages from your gallery. Google scanner documentation (https://developers.google.com/ml-kit/vision/doc-scanner)
Search and OCR. Velum searches PDF text and can use on-device OCR to find Latin text in image-only pages. Page content and match information are processed to provide the search you requested. OCR models or Google Play services components may be downloaded when needed. Velum does not send PDF content to a Velum-operated server.
Passwords. If a PDF is password-protected, the password is used to open that document. Velum keeps it in memory for the active session and does not save it in the app’s database or preferences.
Temporary files. The app may create page previews, temporary processing files, and short-lived export files in its app storage or cache. These support reading, thumbnails, or saving and sharing an edited copy.
OCR and scanning use components delivered through Google Play services. These are Google services and are subject to Google’s terms and privacy practices. Google’s current ML Kit disclosure (https://developers.google.com/ml-kit/android-data-disclosure) says its Android SDKs can collect diagnostic and usage information, including device and app details, identifiers (which vary by SDK delivery type), performance metrics, feature events, configuration details, and error codes. Google says this diagnostic data is encrypted in transit and is not transferred to third parties. The exact data depends on the SDK and version; see Google’s disclosure for current details.
Velum itself has no advertising, billing, account, or custom analytics integration. This does not disable diagnostics collected by Google Play services or other Android components.
Listen uses the Android text-to-speech engine and voice you select. An installed offline voice can synthesize speech on your device. If you choose a voice that requires a network connection, the requested text may be sent by that voice engine to its provider to generate speech. Velum labels network voices and asks you to confirm before using one. The engine provider’s privacy policy applies to its processing; Velum does not control how an external engine handles text.
When you choose to share a PDF or save an edited copy through Android, the file is handed to the app or storage location you select. That provider then handles it under its own privacy practices. A document provider or cloud storage service you selected may store files under your account with that service. Velum does not control those providers.
Library details, bookmarks, progress, and settings remain in Velum’s app-private storage until you remove the Library entry, clear Velum’s app data, or uninstall the app. Removing an entry removes Velum’s Library information for it; it does not delete the original PDF in the location you selected.
Scans that Velum imports are stored as PDFs in the app’s private documents storage. Removing their Library entries does not delete the PDF files. To delete app-private scans and other Velum data, clear the app’s storage in Android settings or uninstall Velum. Export any scans you want to keep first. Uninstalling does not delete PDFs held by another app or document provider.
Use Clear cache in Velum to remove temporary previews and processing files. Clearing cache does not delete source PDFs, scans, bookmarks, or reading progress. Velum’s app data is excluded from Android backup and device transfer.
Velum uses Android’s app-private storage for its database, settings, cache, and imported scans, and Android’s document picker for access to other files. Passwords are not written to persistent app storage. No method of storage or transmission can be guaranteed completely secure; keep Android up to date and share files only with services you trust.
You decide which documents to open, when to scan or search, whether to use a network speech voice, and which app or storage provider receives a file you share. You can remove documents from the Library, clear temporary cache, revoke Android file access, or clear Velum’s app data. For questions or privacy requests relating to Velum, contact [Privacy email address]. For information held by Google Play services, a speech engine, or another provider, contact that provider directly.
We will update this policy when the app’s data practices change. The effective date above shows when the current version took effect. Material updates will be made available at the public policy URL for the app.
The Google services section is included because Google documents diagnostic and usage data collection by its ML Kit Android SDKs; the policy should not claim that no data is collected.
