Veeam Backup & Replication is a software product developed by Veeam Software to back up, restore and replicate data on virtual machines (VMs). First released in 2008, this data protection and disaster recovery technology is part of the Veeam Availability Suite.

Veeam Backup & Replication takes a novel approach to backing up VMs. It operates at the virtualization layer, interacting with other software like VMware vSphere or Hyper-V that manage VMs without installing agents within each VM.

Veeam creates backups by instructing the virtualization software to take snapshots of VMs. These snapshots capture the whole VM state, including configuration, memory and virtual disks. The snapshot can then be used as a temporary copy for Veeam to work.

At a block level, Veeam can retrieve data from the VM disks and copy only the blocks that have changed, as the last backup will have been copied. VMware's Changed Block Tracking enables this, helping to minimize data transfers and accelerating backups. Before storing the data in its proprietary format in the backup repository, Veeam compresses and duplicates the data.

Veeam's Instant Recovery can boot a fully functional VM directly from a backup file in minutes. This approach helps reduce downtime during disaster scenarios. Veeam also supports application-aware restores for specific data types, such as Structured Query Language database transactions.

Veeam replicates VM backups to a secondary location to accommodate quick failover to a replica VM whenever a potential disaster occurs at the primary site. Veeam seamlessly integrates with different storage targets, including backup appliances, on-premises storage and cloud storage options. It also offers wide-area network acceleration features that enable efficient transfers.

The free Community Edition lets users back up a maximum of 10 VMs, physical servers, workstations and network-attached storage instances. Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition provides core functions included in the paid version of Veeam Backup & Replication: backup, recovery and replication.

A fundamental Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition limitation is the 10-instance restriction, which makes it only suitable for personal use cases or small environments. It also lacks advanced features like enhanced security functions, more granular control over scheduling and backup jobs, and support for large workloads and deployments.

Organizations with more than 10 VMs or large environments are better off paying for an option such as Veeam Backup & Replication Enterprise Plus. The free edition is useful to test Veeam's functions and features before committing to a paid plan.

Veeam Backup & Replication Console is essentially a command center for seamless management of backups. It's a separate software component IT teams can use to interact with the server and manage the entire backup infrastructure.

Users can configure backups for physical servers and VMs, schedule and monitor backup processes, and initiate recoveries from the Veeam Backup & Replication Console. They can also manage repositories, monitor the overall health and performance of the environment, and replicate backups to a secondary site.

Users can install Veeam Backup & Replication Console on a different machine for remote access and install as many consoles as needed. Multiple administrators can make changes without conflicts and manage backups simultaneously. This makes it a crucial tool for organizations leveraging Veeam to secure enterprise data.

To create a custom script sensor in PRTG you need to save a script (preferably Powershell) in the following directory on the machine where the script will run (on the core server or on the remote probe):

Invoke-WebRequest : The response content cannot be parsed because the InternetExplorer engine is not available, or Internet Explorer's first-launch configuration is not complete. Specify the UseBasicParsing parameter and try again.

Do you you mean adding "-UseBasicParsing" to line 11, if yes I attempted that as well before sending the update and had the same result. I do notice that on my Windows server 2012 R2 I do not see the "DisableFirstRunCustomize" in the specified folder below. Do I need to create it?

For Veeam Enterprise Manager it was changed to a signed one in IIS. This was fine. I have noticed this isn't changed for the API but can't see where to change this. I have also added the unsigned certificate on the PRTG server and it can get to the api site without certificate errors.

Veeam reports a backupjob as failed in FailedJobRuns even if the retry is successful, which can lead to false positives.I've added a sensor for "FailedVmLastestStates" which will report if backup of a single VM failed. You could also edit FailedJobRuns to only give warnings.

Hi since our Veeam Backup was removed from the AD domain for security reasons I cannot use the sensor anymore. I saved the local admin credentials in the device setting and credentials in the veeam section. The error is:

Hi Moritz,

I tried to store the credentials but since the Veeam Server is not the domain the authentication still fails. I've installed a remote probe on the veeam server where the sensor can now run with local system rights. This workaround solved the issue for me. Thanks

Third-party backup solutions are also available for QNAP ES NAS (including Symantec BE, Veeam, and NAKIVO). Veeam Backup & Replication provides backup, restore and replication functionality for virtual machines that use VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors.

Veeam Backup & Replication is positioned as a part of the Veeam Availability Suite bundle (which includes Veeam ONE for monitoring, reporting and capacity planning), but can also be installed as a standalone product. It is available in three editions based on the level of provided functionality. The product is licensed by the number of CPU sockets purchased.

You need a client PC to install Veeam BR (Veeam BR Server). We created a virtual machine based on VMware vSphere ESXi (the configuration of the Veeam BR server is in the below table). The BR services on the Windows server must run with the same domain user account used for the shared folder on the NAS, with administrative privileges on that server.

You can add VMware vCenter Servers and ESX(i) hosts. If an ESX(i) host is managed by a VMware vCenter Server, it is recommended that you add the VMware vCenter Server, not a standalone ESX(i) host. If you move VMs between ESX(i) hosts managed by the VMware vCenter Server, you will not have to re-configure jobs in Veeam Backup & Replication. Veeam Backup & Replication will automatically locate migrated VMs and continue processing them as usual.

Veeam BR can backup many types of server or computer (including Windows, Linux, macOS, and VMware server). Veeam BR can also back up virtual machines, disks, and files.

This section will assist you in backing up data to a QNAP ES NAS.

Virtualization enables more affordable disaster recovery for SMBs. Previously, having a duplicate backup site required duplicate expensive hardware and infrastructure. With virtualization, virtual machines can easily be copied to alternate backup sites for quick recovery in the event of failure. Testing backups is also simpler through virtual machine replication. Vizioncore provides virtualization solutions like vReplicator that optimize replication speeds and storage usage to enable cost-effective disaster recovery for SMBs through virtualization.Read less 152ee80cbc
