Driving While Intoxicated Enforcement (DWIE)

In an effort to keep the roads and County's of Volusia safe from intoxicated drivers, the Sheriff's Office has established a task force to remove would be drivers from behind the wheel.

The need for effective and proactive enforcement of Florida's’ Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) laws is crucial in combating a continued problem on the roadways.


The Volusia County Sheriff's Deputies are dedicated to the aggressive enforcement of Florida's’ DWI laws and to making the roadways in our county a safe place to travel. A full-time DWI Enforcement Unit was created that consists of one Sergeant and three (3) deputies. The DWI Unit is responsible for the pro-active detection, investigation and arrest of alcohol and/or drug-impaired drivers.


Their primary work hours are consistent with the most prominent times DWI offenses occur, but the deputies often adjust their schedules so they can be present and conduct enforcement activity for various special events and holidays.


Along with the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers, the deputies of the DWI Unit are responsible for enforcing all traffic laws of the state. Other responsibilities include working as instructors for current and new patrol officers in DWI detection and apprehension. They also work closely with DWI detection within surrounding area agencies.


The deputies of the DWI Unit are highly motivated individuals with a passion for what they do. They believe strongly in reducing traffic collisions caused by impaired drivers and in making the roadways in Benton County a safe place for citizens and motorists.

Criminal Investigation Division (CID)

The Criminal Investigations Division has detectives assigned to the following units within the division: General Investigations (Crimes against People and Property), Cyber Crimes Investigations, Sex Offender Registry Investigations, and Narcotics Investigations.

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for bringing a positive resolution to all cases that are investigated. This highly trained group of detectives solve crimes involving; sexual based offenses, homicides, illegal narcotics, thefts, burglaries, robberies, and follow-up incidents from the patrol division.


CID personnel receive intense continuous training in their area of expertise, to include; Crime Scene Investigations, Interview Techniques, Computer Forensics, Internet Crimes against Children, and Polygraph.


Detectives use cutting edge technology to stay proactive in the fight against crime.

High-tech computer forensics, evidence collection tools, and surveillance equipment are just some of the tools utilized daily to give CID a competitive edge against rapidly evolving criminal elements in Volusia County and Northwest Arkansas. CID added a large, state-of-the-art, evidence building equipped with an enclosed processing area for items such as ATVs, vehicles, and boats.


Narcotics Detectives are responsible for planning and conducting covert and overt drug related enforcement operations. The Narcotics Detectives are highly trained in detecting illicit drug trafficking organizations through the use of undercover infiltration and techniques.


All detectives utilize the latest methods to gain and analyze intelligence to bring criminals to justice.

Canine Unit (K-9)

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office K-9 Division is comprised of four patrol canine, one jail canine and one search and rescue bloodhound. The four patrol canines are trained and certified in drug detection and criminal apprehension. The jail canine is a drug detection dog whose primary function is control of contraband in the jail. The newest member of the unit is our bloodhound whose primary function will be tracking for lost children and missing adults. Not only does the K9 Unit perform patrol functions, they are also used in many community related demonstrations and events.


Air Support Unit (ASU)

The mission of the Air Support Unit is to provide effective airborne surveillance and patrol support to bureaus and precincts of the Sheriff's Office. Utilizing the precepts of community based policing, unit goals and objectives are in accordance with the Department's Purpose and Value Statements.
