Extension Master Gardeners are trained volunteer educators. They work within their local communities to encourage and promote environmentally sound horticulture practices through sustainable landscape management education and training.
Yes! Anyone over the age of 18 who has a passion for plants and service to their community can become a Master Gardener.
To become an Extension Master Gardener, you must complete the 50 classroom hour Master Gardener course. This course is offered annually. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be considered a Master Gardener Intern until you complete your first 50 volunteer hours.
Master Gardeners must provide 20 hours of volunteer service through any of our approved projects and activities each year. They are also required to complete 8 hours of approved continuing education each year.
All Master Gardener projects and activities must be approved by our office before hours can be earned. Examples of currently approved projects include maintaining various demonstration gardens, answering gardening questions via our virtual Help Desk, giving educational talks , operating informational booths at various community events, and so much more! Many of our approved projects and activities are supported by our local Master Gardener association, MGACRA. Click here to visit the MGACRA website.
