Dr. S. F. Ali is a Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics at IIT-Madras. His research interests are in smart materials and their applications, control system design, sensor design and energy harvesting. Dr. Ali has authored and co-authored 23 peer reviewed journal articles (Web of Science indexed) and more than 40 national and international conferences. He has also co-authored 1 book and 4 book chapters.

Dr. Ali is a Newton Fellow Alumnus to Royal Society, UK. He was a Newton International Fellow at the School of Engineering, Swansea University, Wales, The United Kingdom between Jan. 2010 and Dec. 2011. Prior to that, he was a Post-doctoral scientist at Automatic Control Laboratory, IUT-Longwy, CRAN-CNRS, Université Henri Poincaré, Nancy, France. 

Dr. Ali obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy in Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 2008. He did his Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India from August 1999 to June 2003.

Dr. Ali is an Associate Fellow of of National Academy of Engineering, India. He was also awarded Young Engineer Award in 2014 by National Academy of Engineering, India. He is also the Joint Secretary of Automatic Control and Dynamical Optimization Society, India.
