Viswanathan Arunachalam earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1996. From 1996 to 1997, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Cell Research and Immunology at Tel Aviv University, Israel. From 1997 to 2012, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá. He chaired the Department of Statistics at Universidad Nacional de Colombia from 2018 to 2020 and is currently a faculty member in the same department. Additionally, he was an Adjunct Faculty member at the Simon A. Levin Mathematical, Computational, and Modeling Sciences Center (MCMSC) at Arizona State University, USA, from 2017 to 2020. Since 2014, he has been recognized as a Senior Researcher by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation of the Colombian Government.
Dr. Arunachalam’s research interests are primarily in stochastic processes and their applications across various fields, including biology, epidemiology, operations research, reliability theory, queuing theory, optimization, time series analysis, financial derivatives, financial market statistics, and risk management. He has supervised numerous doctoral and master's students, managed several internationally funded research projects, and visited academic institutions in the United States, France, Mexico, Chile, and other countries. Since 2000, he has served as an Associate Editor for PLOS ONE.
Dr. Arunachalam has published extensively in prestigious journals, including Optimization, Stochastic Analysis and Applications, Infectious Disease Modelling, Mathematical Biosciences, Computational Economics, Journal of Operational Risk, Annals of Operations Research, International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance, and Computers and Mathematics with Applications. He is also a co-author of the textbooks Introduction to Probability and Stochastic Processes with Applications (John Wiley & Sons, 2012/2014) and Applied Stochastic Modeling (Springer, 2023).
