The zoo opened on 1928 and is home to over 2,300 animals representing 229 species. It was the first zoo to have cage-less exhibits in the country. In 2005, the zoo announced that they will no longer keep elephants on their grounds due to Michigan's harsh winters. The exhibit was then renovated for two southern white rhinoceroses.
In the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery, you can find both birds and butterflies. There is also a small theater and many art galleries right as you enter. After that, you enter the Butterfly Garden, and then you walk through Matilda Wilson Free-Flight Aviary. This is one of the oldest buildings in the entire zoo.
This building, once known as the Penguinarium, will be turned into a bat conservation center in the near future. Unfortunately due to problems with the current penguin exhibit, the penguins had to be moved back temporarily resulting in this project being delayed. The building is located right near the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery and the Tauber Family Railroad.
The Detroit Zoo opened this building in 2000 and was given the name "Disneyland for Toads" by the Wall Street Journal. Outside of the entrance, there is a small splash fountain for kids to play in. The most recent renovation was the opening of the new Japanese giant salamander exhibit in 2018. This building is located next to the Cotton Family Wetlands
Here you can find two species of mammals, the American beaver, and the North American River Otter. There is also a huge lake called "Swan Lake" with a huge boardwalk going over it.
This building is located just behind Swan Lake. Here you can find many species of reptiles including: snakes, turtles, lizards, and crocodiles.
This area is home to one of North America's largest Polar Bear habitat. You can also find seals and arctic foxes. There is an underwater tunnel where you can watch the bears and seals swim right over you. Right before the entrance you can grab a bite at the Arctic Cafe.
The Asian Forest has 4 exhibits. The first one is the large camel and deer yard. It is located next to the Holden Museum of Living Reptiles. The next two exhibits are the Red Panda Forest and Devereaux Tiger Forest. Both exhibits are more recent additions to the zoo.
This exhibit was expanded in late 2018 and included a bridge to walk over the red pandas and is home to 4 red pandas. The newest addition being a female named Keti, who was born in the summer of 2019.
This exhibit is the most recent addition to the zoo. The exhibit was expanded in September of 2019 and is nearly 3 times the size of the old exhibit. The zoo also brought in a pair of male twins, Nickolai and Aleksei, from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The other tiger Kisa, who's an older female, is kept in a large yard behind-the-scenes (not included in map).
This is the most popular ride at the entire zoo. This train brings you from the Chrysler Main Station, all the way back to the Africa Station or visa versa.
This exhibit opened in 2017 and is the largest penguin conservation center in the world. It is home to about 75 penguins including 4 species. The facility is 33,000 square feet and has a 25-foot-deep pool for the penguins to swim in.
This area is still yet to be completed, but you are still able to see the ring-tailed lemurs.
This exhibit is located in the African Forest and houses gorillas and chimpanzees
This exhibit may is located in the African Grasslands, but is considered a part of the Asian Forest. It is home to 11 Japanese Macaques
In this building you can find find the 4-D theater and the simulator ride. There is also a photography gallery and many classrooms mainly used in the summer by the camp.
This exhibit was originally three different exhibits, but was expanded for the three brother bears. There is also a smaller habitat behind the main one for an older female.
The South American area of the American Grasslands contains animals such as the guanaco, giant anteater, bush dog, and more.
As you can see, as I have a lot done, there is still much more to do. Here is every thing that is left
American Grasslands (North America)
African Grasslands
Australian Outback Adventure
Tauber Family Railroad (African Grasslands Station)
Without these mods, the zoo would mostly be full of empty pastures of grass, trees, and flowers. Here are all the mods and Add-ons I used:
