Robocon 2016

Arena of Robocon 2016

Final robots

The theme of Robocon 2016 was "Chai-Yo: Clean Energy Recharging the World" and the problem statement was to manufacture two robots named as "Eco robot" and "Hybrid robot" that had to be confined within specific constraints. The Eco robot had to traverse through a predefined arena, and after that, in the end, the Hybrid robot had to climb a pole to place a propeller on top. However, Eco robot could only have one actuator to steer itself, and driving force of Eco robot should be obtained indirectly from the Hybrid robot. Moreover, the driving force could only be a non-contact force.

I was selected to lead a team of 30 students from different departments for developing both the robots within a time-frame of seven months. My major responsibilities included preparing Gantt chart, managing a budget of $13000, distributing the workload among team members, ensure sub-teams are communicating with each other, arrange meetings with supervisors.

Apart from Robocon, I was also responsible for planning and executing robotics summer training of 40 candidates for the RoboCon-2016 team before the competition, organizing workshops for freshmen students which resulted in more than 90% increase in no. of club members and mentoring teams of freshmen participating in several inter-college robotics competitions across the country.

The overview of the robot is presented in the following PDF. However, complete details of design and working of the robots can be found in paper titled "Design and Development of Robots for ABU Robocon 2016" presented at 3rd international conference on Advances in Robotics (AIR) organized by the Robotics Society of India.

The pole climbing mechanism of the Hybrid robot was further improved after the competition. Based on the performance and reliability of the robot, we were provide with an opportunity of hoisting the Indian flag on the independence day using the robot.
