I obtained my PhD at Ghent University (2008, Belgium). My PhD work investigated the similarities and differences in the processing of numerical and non-numerical, ordered stimuli. The topic of my research changed to consciousness during my time as a postdoc in Neurospin (Paris, France). After another postdoc at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), I moved to the University of Amsterdam (2016, The Netherlands) to become an assistant (now associate) professor in cognitive neuroscience.
I am a PhD student at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) on a joint project between the Brain and Cognition group (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences) under the supervision of Dr. Filip van Opstal and the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience lab (Faculty of Science) under the supervision of Dr. Jeannette Lorteije.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychobiology in 2014 from the UvA. After this, I worked as a TA and traveled through South America. In 2018, I received my Master’s degree in Brain and Cognitive Neuroscience at The Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies of the UvA. During my Bachelor’s and Master’s, I had the opportunity to participate in exciting research projects within various fields of neuroscience through internships in the labs of Prof. Dr. Christiaan Levelt at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, Dr. Rogier Min at the Vrije Universiteit and Dr. Jayeeta Basu at New York University. During these internships I developed a great interest in how electrical activity is propagated in single cells and neural circuits and how these signals translate to behavior.
My PhD research focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying multisensory integration (MSI) and conscious decision-making using different techniques to measure the electrical activity of the brain on different levels. We aim to obtain a multi-level and inter-species view on the contribution of MSI to conscious decision-making.
Besides studying the brain, I am always up for exploring Amsterdam, hanging out with friends, eating great food and working out.
Hi, I am a Persian-born, Dutch-raised PhD student at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Brain and Cognition group, researching the complex interaction between mood, sleep and cognitive functioning under the supervision of dr. Filip van Opstal and dr. Esmee Verwijk.
I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Psychobiology and my master’s degree in Cognitive Neurobiology and Clinical Physiology, both at the UvA. During my studies, I did various internships and projects with both humans and animals, researching sleep and sleep-related disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), familiarizing myself with various (imaging) techniques. After my studies, I worked as a TMS-technician, treating patients with therapy resistant depression. All of these experiences have made it clear that I like to do research with a clear goal: to enhance knowledge and better care. Where fundamental and applied neuroscience meet, is where my interest lies.
Besides neurons, I like music, art and motion pictures in any shape or form and am the happiest in nature.
