Vanessa Ehecatl Santos (born 1978, raised in Los Angeles) is an interdisciplinary artist, healer, and researcher whose biocultural practice bridges visual, ceramic, literary, fiber, and healing arts with land-based inquiry and ecological thought. Their work draws from Indigenous knowledge systems as a Kizh, Mexica, Apache and Yaqui descendant, thru the lense of disability and eco-justice, and experimental form; often grounded in anthroecological and relational fieldwork. Through their evolving project, Ancient Pocket, they cultivate cross-disciplinary approaches to care, material storytelling, and embodied environmental futurism.
Work History
Vanessa Ehecatl Santos has over 28 years of experience as an Interdisciplinary Artist, Eco-Arts Educator and Healing Arts Practitioner. Raised in Los Angeles, their work spans ceramics, painting, sound, time-based media, textile arts, writing, healing arts and eco-spiritual esoteric research, rooted in community care, land-based learning, and accessible, experimental arts education.
They have collaborated and worked with with a wide range of organizations including Tierra del Sol Foundation, High Desert Test Sites (HDTS), Yucca Valley Material Lab (YVML), Joshua Tree Retreat Center, Nature School LA, HoliTOMoli Alternative Academy (Santa Fe), Kossuth County Conservation Board, Water’s Edge Nature Center, Dubuque Public Library, and SheSkates. Across both urban and rural settings; from Los Angeles to the Midwest; they have developed alternative art education programs for home-schooled children, an all ages pedagogy and facilitated public workshops uniting art, ecology, and care-based practices. In their former practices trancing w/ the Elementals, as Grandma Candle, Plant House Share Love, Tres Mares, and Omniscient Productions as a previous cosmic channel of divinity and source wisdom traditions to funnel through human form onto GAIA, spanning the years 1998-2009 in orogenic processes and Akashic Mysteries.
Currently, through Ancient Pocket, Earthen Futures Studio, Terra Heaven Eco Arts, and the Devic Organization of Elemental Science, they cultivate a multidisciplinary art practice that interlaces fine art foundations, metaphysical technologies, healing arts, elemental communion, and ancestral memory. As an Ecology Art Educator and Art Education Vendor with Sky Mountain Charter School, their work exists as a living system of radical care and earth-based futurism; research of material exploration, visions grounded in ancient teachings, and the spiritual technologies of land, clay, and creative interdependent kinship.
