Transformers: The Beast Within - A Fan-Made Masterpiece

If you are a fan of the Transformers franchise, you might have heard of The Beast Within, a fan-made comic that was published in 2004 by TFW2005. The comic tells an alternate story of what happened after the events of Transformers: The Movie, where the Decepticons unleash a dark force that turns them into savage beasts. The comic is widely praised for its stunning artwork, dark tone, and epic action scenes.

In this article, we will explore the origins, plot, and legacy of The Beast Within, and why it is considered one of the best fan-made Transformers stories ever created.

The Origins of The Beast Within

The idea for The Beast Within came from a fan contest held by Hasbro in 2003, where they asked fans to submit their ideas for a new Transformers comic. The winner would get their story published by Dreamwave Productions, the official comic publisher of Transformers at the time. The contest received over 500 entries, but the one that caught Hasbro's attention was submitted by Kris Carter, a fan from the UK.

Carter's story was inspired by his love for Beast Wars, a spin-off series of Transformers that featured animal-based robots. He wanted to create a story that would bridge the gap between Beast Wars and the original Transformers series, and also explore the darker side of the Transformers mythology. He titled his story The Beast Within, and submitted it along with some sketches of his own.

Hasbro was impressed by Carter's story and chose it as the winner of the contest. They then hired him to write the script for the comic, and also hired two professional artists, Don Figueroa and Juan Fernandez, to illustrate it. The comic was divided into two parts, each consisting of 11 pages. The first part was published in October 2004, and the second part in November 2004, as bonus features in issues #6 and #7 of Dreamwave's Transformers: Generation One Vol. 3.

The Plot of The Beast Within

The Beast Within takes place in an alternate timeline, where the Decepticons have won the war against the Autobots and conquered Cybertron. However, their victory is short-lived, as they soon discover a dark secret hidden within their planet: a powerful entity known as The Dweller, who feeds on the sparks (souls) of Transformers. The Dweller infects some of the Decepticons with a virus that transforms them into feral beasts, who then attack their fellow Decepticons.

The only hope for Cybertron lies with a small group of Autobots who have survived in hiding: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Mirage, and Grimlock. They decide to infiltrate Decepticon headquarters and destroy The Dweller before it consumes all life on Cybertron. Along the way, they encounter some familiar faces from their past, such as Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, and Ravage. They also discover that The Dweller is not a random anomaly, but a part of an ancient prophecy that foretells the end of the Transformers race.

The comic ends with a climactic battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron, who have both been infected by The Dweller and turned into monstrous hybrids of robot and beast. Optimus Prime manages to defeat Megatron and destroy The Dweller, but at a great cost: he sacrifices his own spark to save Cybertron. The comic ends with a narration by Bumblebee, who honors Optimus Prime's legacy and hopes for a better future for his kind.
