It was my goal to one day paint in this festival, and I was lucky enough to be accepted in 2025! It was the 51st Incontro dei Madonnari and the 600th anniversary of this festival (1425 - 2025). What makes the festival unique is that painters from around the world create religious images (the traditional meaning of "madonnari" is painters of the madonna) starting on August 14th and running through the night until the afternoon of the 15th. This year, the theme was to paint an image representing an assigned basilica dedicated to the worship of Mary. I represented the Basilica Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia in Higuey, Dominican Republic. It was an amazing experience meeting and learning from artists from around the world, reconnecting with artists I had met in previoius festivals, and speaking with the estimated 100,000 festival visitors. It was a truly beautiful festival.
