My name is Claire Van Brunt, and I am a May 2026 graduate of Clemson University. I am a double major in Modern Languages: American Sign Language and Psychology, and am also minoring in educational interpreting, American Sign Language Studies, and cluster: social sciences.
I had always known I wanted to major in American Sign Language (ASL). Discovering my passion for psychology was a bonus. In my sophomore year, I added a double major in psychology, and it was the best decision I ever made. I began to take classes that shaped who I am today, and I quickly fell in love with the field.
While at Clemson, I have been involved as much as possible. Most notably, I served as the secretary of the American Sign Language Club from 2024-2025 and as vice president from 2025-2026. My goals have been to make the club a welcoming place for developing signers to advance their skills.
Another highlight of my time here has been the ASL department's study abroad program. I spent three weeks in New Zealand and Australia on a faculty-led program to study New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and Australian Sign Language (Auslan). I also learned about each country's unique Deaf cultures and communities. This experience has truly expanded my worldview.
After graduation, I plan on attaining a PsyD in clinical psychology. My eventual aim is to conduct pediatric neuropsychological testing. I want to combine my psychology and ASL skill set to provide services to both Deaf and hearing children.

Here is a short video in ASL describing my time at Clemson.
