A detailed summary report of Workshop
This report provides a brief summary of the workshop conducted on “Outcome Based Education" by the OBE-Co-ordinator in preparation for the upcoming Pre-BOS 2023-24.
Mr. Attuluri Vamsi Kumar, Assistant professor, dept of Medical Lab Technology, University Institute of Applied Health Sciences, Chandigarh University. It was held on 24th September 2022. The workshop brought together Professors, Associate professors & Assistant Professors from the Department of Medical Lab Technology, Department of Optometry & from Department of Physiotherapy, UIAHS, Chandigarh University. The workshop provided an interactive atmosphere between the resource persons and the participants in preparation for upcoming Pre-BOS.
Resource person Mr. Attuluri Vamsi Kumar, began the session with 3 stories (An event co-ordinator dilema, A OBE solution to a teachers Dilemma and a HOS's Dilemma) emphasizing the current scenarios in current traditional education system. A small discussion on the current teaching learning process and its drawbacks. The importance of Outcome based Education and how it can be achieved at different stages was discussed. The instructor helped faculties to understand the outcomes at different levels. He also discussed Graduate Attributes which are the qualities, skills and understandings a university agrees its students should develop their skills during their time with the institution. A detailed discussion on Course Outcomes and how to frame them at different stages using the action word and the learning statement was clearly explained. Bloom’s taxonomy and its verbs were also discussed. Participants were made to understand the importance of action verbs in framing the COs. The verbs to be included and those to be not mentioned are also discussed. It helped participants to frame the COs of their respective courses. Lateron the The instructor gave a very clear explanation on how teaching plans can be prepared keeping COs in mind, how questions can be framed based on course outcomes. Sample Questions and activities at each of the six levels were also discussed with many examples which gave a clear picture to the participants as to how a question paper has to be framed. Question framing at MCQ level was also discussed. A sample question paper prepared with course outcomes was discussed. The second half of the session was on defining rubrics for assessment. It also helped participants to understand how to create and define rubrics at different levels and how much it adds value during the assessment of assignments and answer papers. A demo was also shown on how to prepare and add rubric for assessment which helped the participants to get a clear picture of how the assessment has to be carried out. Later Mr.Vamsi discussed the importance about the issues on Academic Quality Work, Components of OBE, Program Educational Objectives (PEO), Program and Course Outcome, Mapping between POs to PEOs, Mapping of COs to Pos, Process of OBE, Continuous Quality Improvement, and Bloom’s Taxonomy & Order of Learning, Objectives of Accreditation and its Criteria. He instructed the respective department faculties to take necessary steps to write Program Educational Objectives (PEO), Program Outcome (PO), Course Outcome (CO), and PO to PEO, Course outcome to PO. He had interactive sessions with the faculty on course outcomes and mapping to create experience for all the participants.
He also has given the effective ideas for the set up the quality bench marks for academic and administrative activities. He suggested the faculty to be more self-conscious about quality education and research, and continuously involved in its improvement by self-competition and teamwork.
At the end, few participants shared their experiences on how they benefitted by attending the this workshop and gave their valuable feedback.
