Who can join Band?
Starting in 6th grade, anyone is welcome to join! All you have to do is sign up during class registration and you are all set. We will cover choosing and acquiring an instrument once classes begin. Students have the choice of playing any traditional band instrument, with the understanding that it is up to the student/guardian to acquire the instrument (school owned instruments are available on a case by case basis). All students, regardless of previous music experience are welcome. We will go over everything from reading music to how to hold your instrument. Just come with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
What do I need for Band?
Supplies are dependent on the instrument you choose. So, don't buy anything until you know what you are going to play. Instrument trials and decisions will be made during the first couple weeks of classes. Some things you can go ahead and get are pencils, a 3-ring binder, sheet protectors, and a metronome/tuner (or a device that can do those things, like a phone or laptop).
Once you have chosen an instrument, you will need to acquire one to play in class. VAMS Band works with the Hills Music rental program to provide instruments at an affordable monthly rate. Their flyer can be found here. You may also choose to get an instrument elsewhere, which works too, just make sure you consult the handbook for preferred brands and models. You will also need to get all the necessary accessories for your instrument. See the chart to the left to find out what accessories you will need (also found in the band handbook).
*Please see the Band Handbook for more information on recommended instrument brands and supplies.
*Note: Beginners may start on any band instrument, provided it is available or can be acquired. Typically students will start on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, or percussion.
What if I want to change instruments?
Instrument switches are possible, but only under certain circumstances. Students that are making little to no progress on their current instrument may be considered for an instrument switch. These students must be making every effort to improve on their current instrument. Switching instruments partway through the year is a challenge and will only be offered to those showing a true effort. Students that are having physical limitations on their current instrument may also be considered for a switch. These are not valid reasons for considering an instrument switch:
They are bored with their current instrument
They can't play their current instrument and think another would be easier
Students renting through an instrument rental program will have the easiest time switching, since Hills Music's program allows for no cost instrument switches.
