The new snow we experienced along our traverse in Italy and Switzerland also fell in the Mt. Blanc area. On July 12 9 climbers were killed in an avalanche on Mt. Maudit, a subsidiary summit of Mt. Blanc. This was a grim reminder of risks associated with climbing in the mountains. We were happy to have completed our trip safely and will savor another round of memories from climbing in the Alps.

Next, a 3 day hike across the Seiser Alm, the largest mountain meadow in the Alps. We stop at the historic mountaintop Schlernhaus hut, then traverse across the mountains to Plattkofel, a beautiful, newly renovated lodge at the base of an impressive mountain.

Just after dawn we slipped into the forest and hiked a steep trail to a limestone wall. A curious ladder of U-shaped steel rungs was fixed to the rock. To reach the battlefield we would trek several miles along this via ferrata, or iron road, pathways of cables and ladders that traverse some of the most stunning and otherwise inaccessible territory in the mountains of northern Italy. We scaled the 50 feet of steel rungs, stopping every ten feet or so to clip our safety tethers to metal cables that run alongside.

With light packs carrying just the essentials, we were able to traverse the 120km route through the mountains in 6 days. We felt nimble and free with light packs, able to travel more freely from rifugio to rifugio without the burden of backpacking gear to hinder us.

This hike offers high altitude panoramic walking with superb scenery; wildflowers grow in abundance on the grassy slopes populated by cows and marmots.

We transfer to the Sella Pass (7,152'), then hike under Sassolungo and Sassopiatto on the famous Friedrich-August-Weg route. Following ancient shepherd routes, spectacular views take you to Rifugio Sassopiatto (7,546'), and on past hay chalets and hillsides coated in wildflowers. Circling around the mountains, we are surrounded by clumps of yellow Rhaetian poppies. We may opt to visit a camouflaged stone Rifugio Vicenza (7,391'), surrounded by towering rock peaks and a view north over Val Gardena. A level stretch of trail leads through a rocky pass, and on to Rifugio Comici (7,063') to stretch our legs. This loop hike now turns south through an unearthly landscape of tumbled boulders - Citt dei Sassi ("city of stones") - arriving back at Rifugio Passo Sella from where we'll transfer back to Selva.

Trail conditions vary greatly, including a mix of wide dirt paths, hiking trails with rocks and roots, rough, large rocky steps, loose scree, and shallow stream crossings. Uneven terrain underfoot requires agility and stable footing and balance. We request that you bring hiking boots with full ankle support and two trekking poles, which help provide comfort, significant stability, and most importantly, enjoyment. Our hikes take us through farmland, forest, rocky open terrain, and over mountain passes. Each hike includes climbing and descending, sometimes steeply. The trails occasionally travel through exposed sections with drop-offs and traverses steep hillsides or on rocky switchbacks, which may pose an issue for those with vertigo or a fear of heights. Feel free to call our office for further details.

Transcript: To most people, the rocky mountains can be imposing, intimidating even, but in the shadows of these stony faced giants, the best hunters always seem to rise to the occasion. The price of silver and gold is counted in more than just dollars, and we are still paying that price today. With you and Remi Warren on board, we are going to show that even during hardships, this will always be the best place for hunters to experience what Colorado's Wilderness has to offer. And they can start their days at top of mountain ridges, scanning the tree line for Rocky Mountain Elk, before using the afternoon to track the perfect Pronghorn across the boundless grassy plains or waiting for the perfect moment and glimpse of Mule Deer, as it darts across the forest floor; while the commited can spend entire days tracking down the perfect Mountain Lion... But the real attraction for our connoisseurs is a little more feathery: Folks will flock here for Wild Turkey. So, how will YOU spend your time here at Silver Ridge Peaks?

This morning we pack our daypack with what we need for one overnight. Our luggage will be transported to Cortina, where we will arrive tomorrow afternoon. We have a gentle start this morning. After a short initial climb, we enjoy a beautiful two-hour soft descent into a wide valley surrounded by high peaks. We take an amazing trail that climbs steeply out of the valley, hugging the broad flanks of Monte Cavallo, before threading its way through spires of rock before plunging back down to rejoin the principal trail to Lagazuoi. The descent features a truly impressive series of switchbacks down to Lagacio Lake, where we will take a break for a picnic lunch. Following lunch, we have our epic climb to Rifugio Laqazuoi, which sits perched on a ledge overlooking the strategic Passo Falzarego. A starkly beautiful mountain landscape is made more dramatic by the visible remnants of the terrible struggle that occurred here between 1915 and 1917. Twisted bits of barbed wire, trenches, and bunkers line our route up to Lagazuoi, which, at 2,752 meters (9,029'), is one of the highest huts in the Italian Dolomites. Our efforts are rewarded by a truly awesome 360 view of the surrounding mountains and distant green valleys. Lagazuoi also offers an excellent culinary experience. We dine a la carte, and there is also a truly excellent wine list to choose from. The Hike: 8.5 mi (13.7 km) or 5-6 hours; Terrain: hard-packed dirt and rocky trails, some scree, with a steep downhill and one short stretch with some exposure; Elev gain 3,500 ft (1,067 m) and loss 1,230 ft (375 m). In case of bad weather, we have another route which takes us to the Rifugio Scontoni, a fairy tale mountain hut that has the best strudel in the Dolomites! Lodging, breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Note: In case of challenging weather, we have an alternative route which features Rifugio Scontoni, a fairytale mountain hut that serves up the best strudel in the Dolomites! Overnight Lagazuoi Rifugio.Lodging, breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner included.

The Dolomites are very steep and rocky mountains so consequently the terrain is often uneven, rough, stony and hard underfoot and some of the paths are narrow and exposed. There are also vast scree slopes. To get the most from the hikes on this trip you will need to be fit, experienced and free from vertigo. Watch this short video for an overview of what our Italian Dolomites walks offer.

Stage Two

From Les Contamines the route plots a course due South. Follow the Torrent le Bon Nant along forest tracks to the famous church of Notre Dame de la Gorge. Here the climbing begins! An initial ascent along a steep track, built by the Romans, brings you to the flat upper valley beyond la Rollaz; higher up, pass the Refuge la Balme and complete the main part of the climb, reaching Col du Bonhomme at 2,329m (7,641ft). A traverse round to the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme at 2,479m (8,133m) finishes the climbing - relax here to take in the new views to the South over the Beaufortain mountains. All that's left now is a grassy walk downhill to the hamlet of Les Chapieux.

Stage Ten

The next two stages make the link to Les Houches and will see you walking high above the Chamonix valley. Climb from Tre-le-Champ into the Aiguilles Rouges nature reserve, giving one of your best chances to spot ibex (bouquetin) and chamoix. Pass the rock needle of Aiguillette d'Argentiere before climbing up the rocky hillside on ladders. Lac Blanc is a very worthwhile diversion. The climb to this famously scenic lake at 2,532m (7,717ft) can be incorporated into the stage or treated as an out-and-back. Either way, traverse further along the hillside to reach the hut and cable car station at La Flegere. This connects with Les Praz, between Chamonix and Argentiere in the valley below.

This has to be one of my favourite routes at its grade in the Alps. The Weissmies sits above the Saas Valley and offers two very contrasting faces. On the north side the mountain has steep glacial terrain accessed from ski lifts, and on the other a fun rocky scramble from a beautifully-positioned hut that can only be reached on foot. This south ridge begins with a walk-in to the Allmageller hut, which has recently been refurbished and extended, offering a very comfortable night. From here, follow a track through boulders and slabs to the Zwischbergen Pass. Next you can follow the southeast ridge directly, or more commonly drop into the right side and climb the snow until you find an easy place to join the ridge. Follow the crest of the ridge, which changes from rock to snow. The traverse continues down the west ridge then drops down through a steep but short ice fall. This is not a place to linger as the route is threatened by a number of seracs. The steep ground gives way to an easy-angled but crevassed glacier, which you cross to reach the top of the ski lifts at Hohsaas.

It was our first encounter with a lesson that would repeat itself many times over the course of our week of hiking on the Alta Via 2: These mountains are so steep and rocky that the trail often traverses ground that, from a distance, looks impassable without ropes and climbing gear. 589ccfa754
