Pétanque in Sonoma started in Sonoma 35 years ago:
In the late 1980s, pétanque was introduced to local players John Bouldt, Pierre Joske and John Kemble, through Sonoma's Sister City relationship with the French village Chambolle-Musigny. These boulistes organized the Valley of the Moon Pétanque Club and soon, pétanque became a part of wine country living.
Mayo collection of early VOMPC archives:
The Valley of the Moon Petanque Club (VOMPC) is a community dedicated to playing and promoting pétanque, a French boule game. Pétanque is similar to games like bocce, lawn bowling, and marbles but has distinct rules and strategies. It is played on uneven terrain and requires skill, precision, and strategic thinking, often compared to chess in complexity.
The club is located in Sonoma at Depot Park behind the town square and focuses on fostering a relaxed, inclusive environment. Members participate in tournaments, casual games, and social events, emphasizing camaraderie and fun over formalities or competitive status.
While pétanque is less formal than sports like tennis or golf, it challenges players with its dynamic nature, incorporating elements like terrain and ball selection into gameplay. The game is popular worldwide, played in numerous countries, including the U.S. and Mexico. The Valley of the Moon Pétanque Club reflects this global culture, offering a welcoming space for enthusiasts of all skill levels.
