The Health Tech Academy has fueled my passion for medicine and equipped me with the foundation and skills necessary to pursue a career.
Tou Vue, medical student, UC Davis School of Medicine
Health TECH Class of 2014
Health TECH is one of the primary reasons I got accepted into Brown University. Firstly, the academy taught me the importance of being in tune with your community. Within our CACHE Project (Cultural Awareness Community Health Education), we received the opportunity to speak at a Hmong radio talk show, present on Hmong TV for an entire episode, and individually meet and talk with the Board of the Elk Grove Unified School District. Health TECH also helped me find the words to discuss the health disparities within the Hmong community during my Brown University interview. Mr. Black inspired me to apply to the top colleges. He prepared me to excel in college interviews by giving me mock interview practice, a portfolio of my Health TECH projects, and relevant research about the schools.
The academy also prepared me to continue my pursuit of medicine, as I am currently a third-year medical student in the top DO program in the country at Des Moines University - College of Medicine. Since graduation, countless other alums have entered nursing, dentistry, and pharmacy. This is a truly remarkable feat. I need the experiences and knowledge we gained in the Health TECH academy to fathom what fields we would enter.
After ten years since graduating, I am very proud of the improvements that Health TECH continues to provide its students, such as internships and other service-learning opportunities, many of which were not available during my time as a student. To see its growth is beautiful, and I hope the academy continues to yield fruit in several aspects. I am thankful for everyone involved who believes in Mr. Black and his mission to support our students. I am very proud to be a Health TECH Academy alumnus.
Fue Vue, medical student health TECH Class of 2013
Health TECH influenced me to pursue a career in medicine. The organization taught me about the various health careers available. It allowed me to build a foundation of knowledge that propelled me to succeed through college, medical school, and now medical residency. Mr. Black played a crucial role in my development as a young student and motivated me to achieve my dream of becoming a physician. Not only that, but he also helped connect me to community partners who became instrumental in my journey to becoming a doctor. Without Health TECH, I would have struggled much more to make it this far in my career.

Health TECH Class of 2014: I wouldn't be who I am today without Health TECH Academy. I have built connections and attained experiences in Health TECH that I cannot in other CTE programs, including settings such as college. I am very grateful for the opportunities to create projects with a team, engage with our community, perform screenings, and educate medically underserved communities about health. I gained work-related experience and learned from medical professionals in federally qualified health centers (WellSpace, One Community Health, Sowing Seeds), something that even college students struggle to obtain. Health TECH community events and activities shaped my character and enhanced my passion for working in the medical field. Health TECH Academy is the nation's first CHW-based program for high school students and has earned its name!

Health TECH Class of 2020
Health tech provided many eye-opening experiences, revealing the prevalent health issues within my community, including disparities and a lack of accessible healthy resources. This program not only exposed these challenges but also allowed us students the resources to actively engage in addressing them. Through my first internship in health tech, I began my journey toward medicine, recognizing the vital need for trustworthy healthcare professionals in the South Sacramento community. The knowledge gained while in health tech has also provided a lasting foundation, shaping my understanding of the human body's complexities and the community's prevalent issues.

Health Tech was overall a great experience. I learned a lot and still see some things I learned during Health Tech. For example, concepts like nutrition and motivational interviewing are still prevalent today. I highly encourage anyone interested in health to look into Health Tech. It's a great introduction to the health field and a way to build connections.

Health TECH Class of 2020
Health Tech has prepared me for the medical world. I gained many valuable knowledge, experiences, and opportunities that helped me prepare for the medical school route. I realized the heavy-weight experiences and connections I have as an applicant. I learned valuable life lessons, and even now, I receive the guidance needed to excel. Mr. Black has always been supportive along the way, and even upon graduation, he has opened up many internships and job opportunities. Through Mr. Black, I got my first job experience through ACC and a current internship through the Growing Seeds Foundation. Mr. Black goes above and beyond for his students, regardless of when they graduate.
