Rubefacients can also be used to treat joint pain caused by osteoarthritis.
Rubefacients are believed to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis by causing irritation and reddening of skin because of increased blood flow.
It produces a warm, reddening effect on the skin upon rubbing.
Rubefacients are topical medications which are available as foams, lotions, gels, creams, and ointments.
However, studies have indicated that rubefacients have minimal effect on improving the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
There is no strong evidence to prove that topical salicylate-containing rubefacients will effectively relieve pain.
