For SLO 2 we are going over atmospheric circulation. Atmospheric global circulation is caused by different parts of the world heating up differently. The sun is our main source of heat, the heat travels to us through space in the form of radiation. The suns radiation is absorbed by clouds, gases in the air and the earths surface. Some parts of the earth, more than others receive more of this radiation. The biggest reason for this is the curve of the earth. But why? Well, the curve of the earth means that at higher latitudes, the radiation from the sun is spread over much larger surface areas, while the same amount of energy is much more concentrated near the equator. It is also known that the radiation travels through greater depth of atmosphere near the north and south pole in comparison to the equator. Another main reason is the earth is tilted on its axis. the tilt of the earth also means the polar regions. Do not see daylight during the winter. In and around the north and south poles It is covered by snow and ice and also fit clouds. Reflect a lot of the suns radiation back into space which sends a lot of heat back into space more than keeping it on earth. Global circulation acts as A air conditioning system distributing the heat, stop in the equator, becoming very very hot and the poles becoming freezing cold. This atmospheric circulation takes the form of three large cells which exist in both the northern and Southern hemispheres. The largest cells are they hadley cells which are near the equator. The smallest cell is the Polar cells. Which is cold dense air descending in the polar regions and flows at low levels at about 60° to 70° north or south. And lastly between the hadley and polar cells are the Ferrel cells. The difference between the ferrel cells and the others is that it is not driven by the difference in temperature. They are like a guard between both but also transferring heat from the equator to poles. All of these cells together create rising and descending parts of the circulation cells giving us our climate zones.
In class we did an activity with a balloon replicating with a marker the earths air currents caused by the earths rotation.
Heres my best friend Rio doing the activity with me
