Our Lady of Good Health, also lovingly known as Our Lady of Vailankanni, is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary who is believed to have appeared in the small town of Vailankanni in Tamil Nadu, India.
Known as the “Lourdes of the East,” her shrine attracts millions of pilgrims every year — people who come seeking healing, hope, and peace through her intercession.
More than 400 years ago, in the small coastal village of Vailankanni in Tamil Nadu, India, a young Hindu shepherd boy was walking with milk pots for a customer in the nearby town of Nagapattinam. On his way, he was tired and decided to rest under a banyan tree near a pond.
Suddenly, a beautiful lady appeared before him, holding a child in her arms. She had a heavenly glow and asked the boy for some milk for her child. Awestruck, the boy gave her the milk. When he later delivered the remaining milk to the customer, he apologised, explaining what had happened. However, when the customer opened the milk pot, he saw it was completely full—as if none had been taken out.
The boy ran back to the pond, and the Lady appeared again, this time revealing herself as Mary, the Mother of Jesus. This sacred spot became the place of the first apparition of Our Lady of Good Health.
Today, pilgrims visit this site, known as the "Matha Kulam" or "Our Lady's Tank," to remember the innocence, faith, and generosity of that young boy.
Years after the first apparition, Our Lady appeared again in Vailankanni. This time, she chose to show her grace to a crippled boy who could not walk since birth.
As he sat by the roadside near Vailankanni, he saw a vision of a radiant Lady with a child in her arms. She smiled at him and asked him to go to Nagapattinam and tell a Catholic gentleman there to build a chapel in her honour at Vailankanni.
The boy was confused. "But I cannot walk," he said.
The Lady looked at him with compassion and said, "Stand up, my child. You are healed."
The boy felt power surge through his legs and stood up for the first time in his life! Overjoyed, he ran to Nagapattinam and delivered the message. Deeply moved, the Catholic gentleman fulfilled Our Lady’s request and built a small thatched chapel at the place of the apparition.
This miracle reminds us that nothing is impossible with God and that Our Lady intercedes for those who have faith.
In the 17th century, a Portuguese merchant ship was caught in a violent storm while sailing across the Bay of Bengal. The waves rose high, and the ship was at the mercy of the sea.
Fearing death, the sailors gathered together, knelt in prayer, and fervently called on the Blessed Virgin Mary. They promised that if she saved them, they would build a church in her honour.
Miraculously, the storm calmed, and the ship safely reached the shores of Vailankanni on the 8th of September—the birthday of Our Blessed Mother.
True to their promise, the sailors built a permanent church in Vailankanni to honour Our Lady of Good Health. This church became the foundation for the great shrine we know today.
Through this miracle, Our Lady showed her motherly care and protection over all who seek her help, even across oceans.
The Feast of Our Lady of Good Health is celebrated on 8 September, with nine days of Novena Masses leading up to it.
Here in Sydney, we honour her with a community novena and feast at Mary Immaculate Parish, Quakers Hill — all are welcome, whether it’s your first time or a cherished tradition.
