The purpose of the Virginia Association of Educational Office Professionals (VAEOP) is to:
Advance the educational interest of Virginia through efficient and professional services of office professionals.
Cultivate a spirit of interest and cooperation among educational office professionals.
Attain professional status for the association membership.
Foster interest in the National Association of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP), and provide past presidents scholarships for members.
The Richmond Association of School Secretaries, organized in 1926, was the VAEOP parent group of the NAEOP.
On July 5, 1934, a small group of educational secretaries convened to form the National Association of School Secretaries. Forty-one members attended the first annual conference, held in 1935. At the annual NAEOP conference held in 1991, over 600 persons were in attendance.
On November 5, 1937, school secretaries throughout Virginia were urged to unite in order to better serve the schools. Nine secretaries met on November 26, 1937, in the old John Marshall High School in Richmond and the Virginia Association of Educational Secretaries became a reality. In 1983, the name was changed to Virginia Association of Educational Office Personnel, and in 1991 it was changed to Virginia Association of Educational Office Professionals.
