This presentation will steer (hint, hint) graduate students and/or new professionals in their transition to a full-time student affairs role. So, let’s get in the car and drive down this path together!
This session is a meeting space designated for VACUHO's Senior Housing Officers.
This program is aimed at helping Residence Life Professionals manage stress and promote mental wellness. The program offers a supportive environment for participants to learn and practice techniques and strategies such as stress management, mindfulness, self-care, and emotional regulation. Participants will have access to resources and tools to identify and address sources of stress and develop healthy coping mechanisms. The program also includes group discussions and storytelling activities to foster a supportive community and provide a forum for open dialogue about participants' experiences and challenges.
As a Mid-Level Professional, there are plenty of times you may feel like you are dancing in the middle. From juggling responsibilities, supervisees, supervisors, and campus/departmental politics, it at times can be intricate to navigate. This session will have a panel of Upper and Mid Level Professionals discussing how they have navigated these topics, their professional journeys, and professional development.

During the lunch segment, there will be a selection of boxed Boars Head Sandwiches and Salads for pick up outside of the Alice Haynes Room. Our staff will be dismissing participants to grab lunch so please take a seat and you will be directed towards lunch shortly. Those of you who identified dietary restrictions will be encouraged to grab lunch first. Those with dietary restrictions that were noted in registration will have a circle dot on your name badge as an identifier. You will notice that there is a raffle ticket in the back of your name badge because, during lunch there will be a raffle!

This presentation will provide a general conceptualization of supervision and an overview of Developmental Models, Process Models, and Situational Leadership Models of supervision. Additionally, this presentation will provide specific examples of these models applied to Residence Life and Student Affairs. Lastly, this presentation will provide a reflection of multicultural considerations and complex power dynamics that exist in supervisory relationships.
This session will focus on teamwork, empowering students, and the magic of “Believe”, in the presentation The Lasso Way – Empowering and Motivating Your Team. Attendees will learn how emphasizing teamwork during Fall RA Training at the University of Mary Washington changed the game with student staff and brought everyone together for an engaging and successful year.
During this session, participants will be guided in discussion around trending topics and issues within the assignments and housing realm of our field.
During this session, the presenter will share strategies on how entry level staff can serve as effective supervisors for both small and large student staff teams.

Critical whiteness studies "brings whiteness (as a concept) into the center of analysis in order to locate it, demystify it, and, if possible, discontinue its hold on education." This program introduces residence life professionals to critical whiteness studies concepts, perspectives to apply the concepts to residence hall management, and provides opportunities for reflection to develop ways to dismantle racial oppression and interrogate whiteness in residential spaces.
Effective Everyday Mediation Practices When Facilitating Difficult Discussions With On-Grounds Residents and Student Staff While Building Trusting Relationships. This program will explore theories about "holding space" and ego and the impact each have on mediations and other challenging conversations professional housing and residence life staff face daily. Through the programs informative and questioning model, the hope is that professional housing and residence life staff will integrate the practice of "holding space" and minimizing ego during the 2023-2024 academic year.
During this session, participants will be guided in discussion around trending topics and issues about student engagement within RLH.
Housing assignment professionals want to share housing processes and challenges with other residence life functional areas. Join us to learn about the intentionality, attention to detail, and decision making process when making housing assignments.
