How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want a wireless, noise-cancelling headphone you can wear on a plane, in a café or on a commute and shape the sound to your own taste through an app, choose V-MODA M-200; if you need an open-back, wired planar-magnetic headphone built for serious home listening and studio detail, choose HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear.
• V-MODA M-200 biggest strength: Hybrid active noise cancellation adjustable across 10 levels, plus a companion app with an EQ tool, so you can tune the sound signature yourself.
• V-MODA M-200 biggest trade-off: It's a Bluetooth headphone with 20 hours of ANC playback, so you're always managing a battery and charging over USB-C.
• HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear biggest strength: An open-back planar-magnetic driver with Stealth Magnet technology and the NEO supernano diaphragm, tuned for a wide, natural soundstage and low distortion.
• HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear biggest trade-off: It's fully wired with a 3.5 mm detachable cable and open-back cups, so it leaks sound and won't isolate you from a noisy room.
• Pick V-MODA M-200 if you want one headphone for travel, commuting and everyday wireless listening with noise cancelling on demand.
• Pick HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear if you listen at a desk or in a quiet room and want maximum sonic detail from a wired open-back design.
The M-200 is a closed-back, over-ear wireless headphone with a metal build, a flexible headband and a matte black finish that's meant to survive daily handling. V-MODA tests it against its own durability standards and includes an exoskeleton carry case, a 3.5 mm audio-only cable, a USB-C charging cable, a flight adapter and a carabiner clip — the accessory list alone tells you this is a headphone designed to leave the house.
Its headline feature is hybrid active noise cancellation with 10 adjustable levels. Feed-forward and feed-back microphones work together to neutralize outside noise, and you dial the strength up or down in the V-MODA app. That same app also gives you an EQ tool, so you can build a personal sound signature rather than accepting a fixed tuning. The "Voice In" feature is the practical detail I like most: it momentarily drops the volume and pauses ANC so you can hear someone talking to you without pulling the headphones off. Battery life is rated at 20 hours with ANC on, and a 10-minute FastCharge gets you roughly 1.5 hours — enough for a short flight or a commute when you forgot to plug in.
HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear: Who It's For
The Edition XS is an open-back, over-ear planar-magnetic headphone — a category defined by driver technology rather than convenience features. HIFIMAN's Stealth Magnet design is shaped so sound waves pass through the magnets without generating interference, which the company says dramatically reduces wave diffraction turbulence and the distortion that comes with it. The NEO supernano diaphragm is described as substantially thinner than earlier versions, and that thinness is what drives fast response and detailed imaging.
The numbers back up the intent: frequency response runs from 8Hz to 50kHz, impedance is 18 ohm and sensitivity is 92dB. That low impedance makes it relatively easy to drive from a decent source, though a planar-magnetic open-back like this still rewards a proper headphone amp or a quality desktop DAC. The headband uses memory foam inside a matte black exterior and is built to hold its fit over years of use. The cable connects via user-replaceable 3.5 mm sockets, so a damaged cable is a cheap fix rather than a dead headphone. It weighs 405 g — noticeably heavier than the V-MODA, and worth knowing if you wear headphones for hours.
Who should buy it: home listeners, audiophiles, mixing and mastering users, and anyone chasing a wide, natural soundstage. Who should skip it: commuters, travelers, and anyone who needs noise cancelling or wireless freedom. Open-back cups leak sound in both directions, so you'll hear the room and the room will hear you. There's no battery here at all — it's wired only.
Side-by-Side: Which Should You Choose?
• Best for noise cancellation → V-MODA M-200, with 10 adjustable hybrid ANC levels.
• Best for travel and commuting → V-MODA M-200, thanks to Bluetooth, the flight adapter and the carry case.
• Best for critical listening at a desk → HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear; its 8Hz–50kHz range and 18 ohm impedance suit a good desktop setup.
• Best for customization → V-MODA M-200, via the in-app EQ tool and adjustable ANC.
• Best for cable flexibility → HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear, with user-replaceable 3.5 mm sockets; the M-200 also offers a 3.5 mm wired option alongside USB-C charging.
• Best for lighter weight → V-MODA M-200 at 320 g versus 405 g.
• Best for quiet-room privacy → V-MODA M-200; the open-back HIFIMAN leaks sound by design.
In my opinion, these two aren't really competitors — they're answers to different questions. If I had to pick one for most people, I'd take the V-MODA M-200, because wireless playback, adjustable noise cancelling, a 20-hour battery and app-based EQ cover far more of everyday life, and the wired 3.5 mm option keeps it useful when the battery runs down. But if your listening happens at a desk in a quiet room and you care about imaging and soundstage above all else, I'd recommend the HIFIMAN XS Full-Size Over-Ear without hesitation. Decide where you actually listen, then buy accordingly.
The V-MODA M-200, clearly. It's wireless over Bluetooth, has 10 levels of hybrid active noise cancellation and ships with a flight adapter, so it's built for noisy travel. The HIFIMAN Edition XS is wired and open-back, so it neither blocks noise nor keeps your music private.
Not strictly — at 18 ohm and 92dB sensitivity it's relatively easy to drive, so many sources will get it loud enough. That said, planar-magnetic open-back headphones generally benefit from a dedicated amp or a quality desktop DAC for the detail and dynamics they're capable of.
It depends on your room. The HIFIMAN Edition XS is the more analytical tool, with its Stealth Magnet design, NEO supernano diaphragm and 8Hz–50kHz range aimed at detail and low distortion. The M-200 is the better choice if you need single-ear monitoring flexibility, isolation, or to move between rooms untethered.
