To reach the location of the former Pokes Pride Center, go into the UWyo Union and take the elevator or the stairs to the basement.
In 2000, the Rainbow Resource Center opened as a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ identifying students and allies to come together. It was renamed to the Pokes Pride Center in 2023. Though under a different title, it still operated as a safe space for queer students to seek resources, participate in conversation, and enjoy various events that celebrated their identities. It once stood proud in the University of Wyoming Student Union, with visible pride flags draping from its ceilings and walls. Unfortunately, the Pokes Pride Center was closed down in the spring of 2024 due to enacted legislation preventing the university from spending state money on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. This space has hosted two associations since. Upon the closure of the Pokes Pride Center, it was immediately converted into the UW Closet (a resource closet donating professional clothes), and it was later changed, once again, into the offices of the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW). As of 2026, ASUW is what you currently see operating in this space that was once home to the Pokes Pride Center. Although the Pokes Pride Center no longer remains, it lives on in public memory as a place that offered knowledge, solace, and community amongst queer students and allies.
