Mountain season comes in the early fall, just as school is getting started. We generally have 4-5 different race weekends taking place throughout the northeast. Each weekend consists of 4 different races: Cross Country, Short-track, Downhill, and Dual Slalom or Enduro. Athletes can compete in as many or as few of these races as they would like. Racers are divided into Men’s A, B, and C and into Women’s A or B categories. We also camp out at these race weekends, adding an extra element of fun and camaraderie.
If 'cross isn't here, 'cross is coming! The cyclocross season begins right as mountain season comes to a close. We travel around New England in October-November to cross races that are open to the public, not just students. Racers compete in domestic categories 1-5, racing as many laps as possible in the amount of time your category designates. Cyclocross races feature dirt, pavement, grass, run-ups, tight corners, barriers, mud, and sand in a short (1-2 mile) course.
By the time the snow melts (well, sometimes before the snow melts) road season is in full swing. There are 4-5 race weekends in March & April in the northeast. Athletes can expect to compete in any of the following races on a given weekend: criterium, road race, team time trial, uphill road climb, individual time trial, or circuit race. Men race in categories ranging from A-D and women have A-C. Beginners clinics are held before the races to teach new riders how to compete safely in a pack.
You never have to ride alone! Our officers and general members put on several group rides each week, covering road, mountain, and casual bike path rides. Some rides are no-drop (chill pace, no one left behind) and others are drop (higher intensity, usually road rides).
UVM has one of the largest women's collegiate cycling teams in the country. Women's-specific events include weekly group rides, skiing together in the winter, social creemee runs, and much more. Our women's team coordinators are at the heart of it all and are always happy to answer questions and provide guidance.
Every March, a crew drives down to North Carolina for a week of mountain, gravel, and road adventures. We hit up favorites like Pisgah National Forest, Ride Rock Creek, Dupont State Forest, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and much more. Every day ends with a team dinner, group activities, and sometimes a hot tub sesh.

We recognize that cycling is a sport that can be exclusionary to many groups, particularly women, LGBT+ people, people of color, and low-income people. We strive to create a team environment where anybody can experience the joy and community that cycling can bring. Here are some of the ways that we work to promote inclusion at UVM Cycling:
Dedicated women's team coordinators are part of our officer team and are responsible for supporting and advocating for women and nonbinary members
Whenever possible, making nonbinary race categories an option (ECCC races generally have nonbinary categories for mountain and cyclocross)
Reducing/waiving race weekend, Nationals, and/or Spring Break fees if it presents a significant financial barrier to a member
Expanding our fleet of team bikes and other equipment that can be used for free by team members
Ongoing group discussions about team culture & inclusivity
We welcome constructive feedback and questions. You can reach us at cycling@uvm.edu.
