UUFCC IMAGINE & DREAM Lantern-Making Challenge

Fellowship and Community participants of all ages are each asked to create their own unique festival lantern or luminary bag for planting in the UUFCC Lantern Garden.

As you prepare your little light, you are encouraged to strive to become a better change-agent in 2023 by taking part in the UUFCC Imagine & Dream lantern-making challenge…find new ways to change (safe) recyclables and/or ordinary household materials into attractive and meaningful festival lanterns (and without using flames or power cords).  Lantern-designs should be consistent with the aims of the festival, and for practical reasons there are additional constraints on what types of lanterns are permitted.

Some general guidance on lantern-making can be derived from the IMAGINE & DREAM festival logo (see below), which illustrates the elements of the ordinary, yet amazing human process of creating something new.  As the diagram suggests, creativity can be readily enhanced through a virtuous cycle wherein one will be able to imagine and make more types of lanterns with better-made features the more one examines and learns about lanterns made by one's self or by others.   Lantern-making can also be a fun social activity that is suitable for almost all ages and abilities!

Participants can get started on lantern-making by reading our quick-start guide for making simple Imagine & Dream Lanterns.  We will also have lantern-making help and materials at a table at the Saturday event.

The virtuous cycle of creative change enables us to progress from making simple festival lanterns to more elaborate lanterns.
