Plant Tycoon is a gardening sim game where you nurture plants and experiment with increasingly rare and valuable species. The object is to breed and cross breed plants until you find the 6 Magic Plants of Isola and solve the genetic puzzle. You start with a couple of dollars, a handful of seeds, some soil and water. Grow plants, organize and harvest seeds, monitor your plants' health, age and maturity and protect your plants from dehydration and infestations. Sell some of your creations to fund your research, buy better supplies to use in your Nursery and purchase ornaments to customize your virtual garden.

The game is some sort of a sequel to Fish Tycoon. As such, it has several similar features. However, Plant Tycoon does improve on many of them. You have your breeding screen where you grow and take care of your plants. You also have to take care of your supplies, getting better ones or looking that they don't run out. And you also have to sell your plants to fund yourself. The whole purpose of funding yourself is that you can find the 6 magical plants of the island.
There are many improvements from Fish Tycoon. One of them is the "insta-grow" supply that allows you to speed up the growing time of your plants. allowing you to start selling and experimenting right away. There is also the "real-time" feature, in which your plants continue to grow regardless if you are playing the game or not, and can be turned off. There are also a couple of mini-games such as gathering bugs and displaying them to the public. The game has the same problem as Fish Tycoon: its theme. It might not be appealing to everyone. You can try it for 60 minutes and see if you like it though.
A lot of the old features carried over: more expensive soil and water is a necessity for your fragile cross-pollinated plants, decorations brings in more customers, etc. The soil system works quite well, but I always found the nursery decorations to be little more than vanity buys. Your customers will eventually buy all your plants if you leave them there long enough, regardless of whether there are enough of them.
The plants take a while to mature and in the meantime all you can do is watch them, maybe picking up the bug catching net a few times to swipe at the insects in order to add them to your collection. That's why I like having Plant Tycoon open while I work or while I play rounds of another game.
Sometimes I fall into the trap of watching and waiting, whiling away the time as I keep too much of a close eye on my plants. I hate those times because I walk away from them feeling like I've wasted part of my life.
