UTSC's new screen-free socialization space!
The Recharge Room is a reimagining of a typical lounge space into something more communal, built for and by the students using it. Poll results from UTSC students inform what goes on in the space, when it operates, and even what design was used for the logo.
Central to the room's model is a purposeful lack of electronic devices (cellphones, laptops, tablets) to keep this space the once place where students can just be, untethered from technology, all while juicing up their batteries for their next class. A dedicated charging station will keep devices safe while their owners engage in face-to-face interactions, casual socialization, games and hobbies, and more.
Since no one is happy when they're hungry, snacks are provided.
The Recharge Room is an initative to both create a functional third space on campus and to collect important data on the efficacy of screen-free spaces in the current landscape of limited social connectivity among young adults, as indicated in a recent census of UTSC student experience.
