Solitary bees are bees that live alone instead of in colonies like honeybees, and pollinate 2-3 times as many flowers as them, making them important players in our ecosystem. They do not make honey. They are much smaller in size and typically do not sting. In California, almost all native bees are solitary bees; yet, most people are unaware of their existence, only having knowledge of the more well-known but non-native European Honeybee. This is especially concerning given that they are facing decline due to threats like habitat loss due to development and illness due to widespread use of pesticides. My goal with this eagle project is to help solitary bees by spreading awareness about them and building solitary bee habitats to help their populations as well.

These solitary bee habitats provide nesting locations for Solitary Bees which are losing their habitat.
Features:
Replaceable drilled block contains nesting cavities the bees reside in - allows the housing to be reused
Sloped overhanging roof protects the cavities against moisture
Use of redwood protects it against the elements
Bright paint attracts bees and makes it easier for them to locate their nest
Water resistant coating prevents damage to paint or wood
Placard links to informational website to spread awareness
20 have been built, which were given to several local organizations.
Current locations:
Loyola Elementary School
Hidden Villa
Proof School

I am also creating binders and flyers with information about solitary bees that organizations can use for their own educational purposes.
