2.1 EXPRESSING PURPOSE OF DOING SOMETHING

2.1 EXPRESSING PURPOSE OF DOING SOMETHING

We can use “will” and “be going to” to ask for and state intention and purpose to do an activity.

For example :

- Anyway, will you paint the tires?

- Yes, it will make them more beautiful.

- My neighbours and I are going to place them along the ditch sides.

Pay attention to the following patterns and examples.

1. WILL

Pattern:

Will + Verb 1

Examples:

(+) We will arrange the old tires near the ditch

(-) We will not arrange the old tires near the ditch

(?) Will we arrange the old tires near the ditch?

2. BE GOING TO

Pattern:

be + going to + Verb 1

Note: To be; is, am, are

Examples:

(+) We are going to color the old tires

(-) We are not going to color the old tires

(?) Are we going to color the old tires?

We also can use “in order + to infinitive”, “to” and “so + that clause”

1. In order to (untuk)

Pattern:

In order to + be/V1

Examples:

- We have to study hard in order to be smart.

- My mother does exercises three times a week in order to keep fit.

- The students woke up early in order to do homework

2. to

“to” must be followed by be/V1

Example:

- She is using her handphone to send a message to her friend.

- I must study hard to pass the final examination.

- They wake up early to be on time to work

3. So that (sehingga/supaya)

In this case, you generally need to used modal (will, can, may, would, could, might)

Pattern:

So that + S + modal + V1

Examples:

- He turned down the music so that he wouldn’t disturb the neighbours.

- He got a visa so that he can travel to theUSA.

- He decided to stay in England for a while so that he could practice his English.

Note:

- “in order to” and “to” is always followed by a phrase

(kata penghubung “in order to” selalu diikuti oleh frasa atau kelompok kata)

- “so that” is followed by a clause

( kata penghubung “so that” selalu diikuti oleh klausa atau sekelompok kata yang mengandung subyek dan predikat)
