Constructive Feedback in Writing Support
Effective feedback helps writers grow by being clear, balanced, and focused on improvement. According to Brookhart (2017), “Feedback is most effective when it is descriptive rather than evaluative, and when it helps students understand what they did well and how they can improve.” Instead of vague comments like “This is confusing,” research suggests offering specific and actionable suggestions, such as “Try breaking this sentence into two to improve clarity.”
Hattie and Timperley (2007) emphasize the importance of balanced feedback, which includes praise for what works and concrete advice for what can be better. This balance builds confidence while guiding revision. For instance, telling a writer, “You’ve chosen powerful examples—now think about organizing them to match your thesis,” encourages both effort and change.
Constructive feedback doesn’t just evaluate—it teaches. Tutors can support writers by naming strengths and offering next steps, such as, “Your voice is engaging. You could make your argument more persuasive by connecting this paragraph more directly to your thesis.” This kind of feedback helps writers stay motivated and see a path forward.
