Most people were not there when their septic tank was installed.
Our process of locating and uncovering septic tanks starts with putting a camera/locator down a cleanout pipe from either the yard or behind the living structure, then we go until we see the tank and use another locator to find exactly where that is sitting. We uncover the lid with a shovel and can inspect the tank.
