Overview
On May 5, 2025, nearly 80 attendees gathered at the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) for the inaugural Utah SciComm Symposium, an event designed to empower scientists to communicate their research with clarity, creativity, and relevance.
Supported by the Research!America Civic Science Microgrant, the symposium brought together researchers, students, and professionals across disciplines to explore how science communication strengthens public trust and understanding of research.
Professional Perspectives
The symposium featured three invited speakers who shared insights from academia, government, and journalism:
Julie Kiefer, PhD – Director of Research Communications, University of Utah
"The Power of Connection: Making Science Matter"
Dr. Atim Enyenihi, PhD – Technology & Innovation Strategic Advisor, Salt Lake City Department of Economic Development
"The Messenger Matters: What Scientific Training Left Out"
Dr. Matthew LaPlante, PhD – Associate Professor of Journalism, Utah State University
"How to Talk to Smart People About Smart Things They’re Not (Yet) Smart About"
_________
Together, their talks highlighted how connection, storytelling, and message framing are key to translating scientific discovery into societal impact.
Interactive STEM Activities
Members of Utah Brain Awareness Week from the University of Utah’s Department of Neuroscience hosted hands-on activities:
Human Brains – Participants observed real human brain tissue and learned about brain structure and function.
Concussion Goggles – Guests experienced simulated concussion effects to test coordination and learn about brain injury prevention.
These activities demonstrated how interactive experiences can deepen curiosity and understanding of science in everyday life.
