Pulmonologist Nathan Hatton is a pulmonary specialist at the University of Utah Hospital. He is quoted an article from The Atlantic.
Over the past few months, these are the feelings that have most frequently accompanied going to work. I work in the epidemiology program at my local health department and for the past 8 months I have spent every working day trying to prevent the spread of COVID-19. There have been lots of amazing moments where I really feel like I have been able to help people, but there have been just as many that have been exhausting, overwhelming, and defeating. I see the deaths, I see the mean comments, I see the protests against us, and I see the lack of effort from the public to help us fight this.
I often see people say “pray for the essential workers” or “pray for the doctors and nurses on the front lines,” and while that is nice... we need more than prayers.
We need you to wear a mask. We need you to stay home. We need you to not see people outside of your household. We need you to support us with your actions, and not just your words. We need you to accept that we spent years learning, studying, and sacrificing to learn how to deal with this and that we know better than you. We need you to trust and listen to us.
If you love me, or if you love anyone who is currently working to fight this pandemic, I beg of you... show that love by helping us fight. Stay home, wear a mask, and follow the guidelines. - Brooke
