Identifying the problems is the first step to finding solutions. Once you know the problem it is important to break it down into smaller pieces. Focusing on a smaller problems keeps the workload manageable. For Utah's water there are two main sources that cause problems for managing our water resources: agircultural and residential water use. Finding sustainable ways to manage agricultural water and residential is essential for providing future generations with reliable water resources.
Utah's Water Use
75% of Utah's water is used to grow crops. Most of the water is used for Alfalfa (hay). About 17.5% is used by residents in their homes. Over half of the residential use of water is for yards. Finding ways to reduce outside water for farming and yards is a primary way we can save water in Utah.
This problem can be broken down into two main issues: Agricultural water use and residential water use. The goals for your team is to research the solution and identify at least three main ways to reduce water use. Specify requirements and reasoning to reduce water use. Identify costs associated with the reductions in water. Develop a plan with steps for your solution. Present your solutions with google slides or a poster.
Click on either residential solutions or agricultural solutions below and research the topic. In your research you are identifying THREE ways to decrease water use so that Utah's water will last to support 5 million people in 2040. In your research pay attention to costs and how to realistically change Utahan's water use pie chart.
Decide with your team how best to present your solution. You can choose either a poster or large white board or produce a google slide. Later students will go on a gallery walk and evaluate student presented plans to identify the best solutions to this problem overall.
