Managing Utah's Water for Our Future
Create and evaluate design solutions for our local environmental problem based on Utah's water resources. Define the problem, identify criteria and constraints, analyze available data on proposed solutions, and determine an optimal solution.
In Utah, we get approximately 95% of our water from snowpack. Reservoir storage is dependent upon snowpack and runoff to get us through dry years. Water is an essential resource and necessary for communities to thrive.
Introducing the Problem: Teacher Slides 1-10
Utah only receives 12 inches of rain on average. It does not have water resources like other states. In order for Utahan's to survive we have built reservoirs, drilled wells, and installed thousands of miles of pipelines to increase runoff from mountains and provide water for our farmers and citizens.
Utah uses an average of 151-200 gallons per person per day. Utah has one of the highest uses rates of water in the nation.
By 2040 Utah will grow by about another 2 million people. All these people will need to use our dwindling water supply.
Utah currently charges the least for water. This encourages over use of water instead of conservation of water resources.
