Show Status: New season being released next month!
Rating: 4/5 (in progress)
Hello, I immediately fell off the writing wagon but I am back, even if it happens to only be momentarily. I’m trying to finish this show before the new season comes out so let's see how I do!
I just watched S2 E4 “There Are Some Women…”. This episode was sort of Eric focused, for a good part of it anyways. Eric is trying to regain his alpha status, the episode starts with him doordashing a single pack of cigarettes which is, dare I say, baller. I kept getting distracted by Eric repeatedly putting cigarettes in his mouth but not lighting them a la “Fault In Our Stars”. Eric goes to NY to meet with Adler and essentially get DVD fired and put the London office back on top (this epically fails BTW).
Eric threatens DVD’s job over the phone before its a done deal and that was a big mistake! DVD and Adler conspire to put Eric in the Pierpoint equivalent of a retirement home. Harper and DVD bond and hookup with another much too long sex scene, Yasmin finds out her dad has a ton of sexual abuse allegations that he's paying these women to keep quiet.
Yasmin is disappointed when she realizes Celeste wont leave her life for her (what!? no…). Yasmin is scared her family might be poor so she asks her dad if they still have money and he says “of course, generationally, many lifetimes over,” which is just an insane response. That’s the gist of the episode, so let's get into the fun stuff.
First of all I love love love how the episode used “Order of Death” by Public Image ltd. This was also just used in Marty Supreme so seeing the two essentially back to back was a very sweet moment. Like I’ve said before, it just feels so good when the show uses 80’s music. Being in the stock market is so 80’s and it just matches the vibes of the show so well. The song is used as sort of a theme song for Eric specifically in this episode, and it catalogues what I can only assume is the beginning of his descent into madness. He is already coming apart at the seams!
I think a big turning point for Eric in this episode (besides getting demoted lol) is him finding out his mentor died, getting housed in his office while he's in NY, and having dinner with his mentor's widow. I think it kind of put into perspective for Eric that he might not have as much time as he thought. Unfortunately, the one thing it did not put into perspective is that you should have at least a sliver of a personal life.
Moving on, Harper was unsurprisingly still a hot mess in this episode! This was one of the first episodes where we really see her being vulnerable with someone (that someone being DVD), which is great for her, but she is not handling it well. She has relations with him in another unbearably long sex scene in which they actually show DVD cumming on Harper! Not sure how showing the cum moved the plot forward so that was cool. Harper leaves the room immediately post hookup to call Jesse Bloom and complain about DVD. She seriously needs to work on her daddy issues. This is the biggest thing that really happens for her in this episode besides Yasmin showing up at Harper's apartment and them hanging out normally like they haven't been beefing for 3 years.
Speaking of Yasmin, I am beginning to piece together the Ghislaine Maxwell comparison, and yikes. I don’t even think this is what people are talking about when they bring up the comparison but this certainly doesn't help her case.Maxim apparently knew Yasmin’s dad had been paying off all these women (I guess this is obvious because he's pretty much managing his finances), and so they fight about that. Maxim also calls Yasmin’s dad Papa (note: not “your Papa” simply “Papa”) which was both irrelevant to the plot and jarring.
Other minor things to wrap up the episode, Gus is fully having sex with Jesse Bloom’s son which is a, shall I say, suspicious age gap. I also am still confused why Gus is working for a conservative political party, but to each their own. Robert found out that Nicole assaulted Harper and his mind was kind of blown that she is a predator and he wasn't special to her.
These were the main things that happened in this episode, it was honestly kind of boring (your fault, Eric). I must admit, I watched the two episodes after this before writing this, so I sincerely apologize if I let any spoilers slip. All I will say is that my GOAT Rishi gets more screen time in the next few episodes. I shall see you soon!
